so i went to mustangs unlimited today and got some new seat buns and i already had the upholstery. i have the day off tomorrow so i think i will try to re-upholster my driver seat. anybody have any tips or tricks?
I just re-upholstered my rear seats, leave the material out in the sun far a while to get it nice and warm to help it stretch a bit, as well as help with any wrinkles. Then just give it a trial fit so you know where you will need to really pull and stretch to get it to smooth out. Then get ready to bitch about the hog rings.
When I did mine I put a bit of burlap between the new buns and the frame. It looked like there might have been some form of plastic style in the new seat buns I got, but I figured it would help keep the seat springs from chafing the new foam.
+1 on bitching at the hog rings. And if you happen to loose a listing rod a coat hanger cut to length works wonders.
thin plastic? like maybe some 4 mil vinyl sheeting from lows or something similar? that's actually a good one. i had never seen that one posted before. thanks for the tips guys. keep 'em coming.
I agree with all that has been said. We redid the upholstery on our 65 several years ago and it was not that bad. If I remember right, we put something like thin indoor/outdoor carpet between the springs and the seat foam.
I did my front seats on my 65 this weekend. I agree w/ letting them lay in the sun. I also put burlap between the seat and the frames. I had problems getting the hog rings to attach to the inner section to the frame (listing rod?) so I took some extra clothes hanger wire and made 1" U shaped rings and then pushed them over through and twisted w/ vise grips on the bottom side untill tight. When I attached the fabric I did use the rings. Mine came out real nice and this was my 1st time.
Mine was the first time for me too. It still looks great and its been quite a few years now. It does make you feel good that you did it yourself doesn't it?
All very good advice, I did fox body seats with pony upolstery with some patience and only a couple scraped knuckles they came out beautiful. Nothing better than the pride of doin it yourself.
