Good Buy??

on the 6500 rpm's thing, it depends on whether or not you have aftermarket rod bolts and a good block, maybe crank and valve locks too. you don't want to drop a valve. i have been to a website that says you send them your t5 and they put better internals and syncros. they say it can handle like 600 ft.pds of tq.

I would get a rebuilt T-5 and just install it myself. It's not too difficult. Just get a manual and it will take you step by step. If the GT is white, just repaint it white so you don't have to have all the door jams done. Just my opinion.

what is a good tremec, or can i somehow beef up the t5? it runs beautifully its jsut the trans thats bad, it just had a tune up and its an all stock(down to the air cleaner) motor...
i also have a question about 347 strokers. i heard that the pstons are so small that most of them blow alot of oil? jw
A 3550 is a good start for the money. There are other companies that upgrade T5's, but by the time you're done you could have bought a TTC unless you do it yourself and you work for free. Gotta figure your time in there. If it runs great, it's definately a good buy. Why are you in such a hurry to do a stroker if it runs good now? Build the car to handle the power first. Take care of your suspension, braking, bracing, etc... otherwise you spend all your money on the engine, and then stuff starts to break from the power and you're broke too. That's your call though, just my $.02... yes, the 347's have a notorious reputation for oiling problems. However, over the years most of them have improved tremendously, and some kits like the one from CHP have completely eliminated it by design. Not much of an issue anymore, unless you go with the cheapest kit you can find. Like I said earlier, you get what you pay for. Do it right, do it once, pay less in the long run. First of all satisfy yourself that this car is a good deal and get it into your yard. Then decide what your goals are for it, and make a plan. From there you can make intelligent decisions about the mods you should do, and the order to do them in for the best results.

I saw an article in a mag on the site you are talking about. They rebuild the unit with brand new, more solidly designed synrchros. Essentially, the synchros mesh a LOT better and the power is spread across internals more evenly. I think they were located in Texas??? I'll see if I can dig that out.

I believe that the rebuild they do (which is TOP of the line) can handle around 350-400 lbs tops. So it's good for a 5.0 build w/mods (even SC), but it too would be hardpressed by 331, 347 or 351W buildups.

So the tremec becomes cost effective, it is close to the cost of the above rebuild - and you know the Tremec can take 500-600lbs.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong!!! Cause I am going to run a T5 with the 351W for a while!!!

1990gt- the cheapest way to convert is to get lucky. Find a smashed SN95 and just take everyting you need. I've neverr seen the kits for less than $600, and that's for single piston GT setups. Cobra conversions usually run up near $850-$900, and this stuff is all used. New stuff will be well over $1000. There are some real redneck ways to do it for dirt cheap, but I'm not the guy to ask about them. You can snag the rear out of some T-birds, that's about all I know.
Heads and intake- define nice. Nice as in cheap with results? Or nice as in "really nice" (with arguably better results)?

Nothing is as good of a deal as i got. I rescently purchased a 91 mustang with the T5 tranny and the wimpy 2.3L N/A engine for 45 dollars.. the car ran, all it needed was a battery. it was vandalized by some teenagers but all they did was spray paint and spill pop on the canter council.. with a good paint job.. the 302 i put in there and cleaning the interior i got a NICE 91 mustang for well under 1K. THATS a deal ;) Of course i did the paintjob myself so all i paid for was material and the engine swap took me a few weeks with the limited time i have between work.. and well work.

i traded a wore out 85 toyota with well over 250,000 miles on it for my 89 notch that already had a 4 inch lift off cowl hood, nice custom interior, subframe connectors, saleen wing and drag springs up front. look at my sig below

Well.......I got my 1985Gt hatch with a rebuilt motor, K&N filter, Accel coil,
welded subframes,oil cooler,stereo,275 50's and 225 50's on stock 10 holes,
headers with catted MAC H-pipe, LX style cat back with flowmasters, cowl mounted 3 piece gauges and dash mount tach, and also aluminum pedals. The doors and hatch needed some love but came with another pair of doors and hatch to boot. The only downside to the car was the pass seat started coming through the floor and the clutch was on its way out prior to the purchase. Body wise it is a sunroof car and the roof proves it leaked pretty bad and had been fixed with bondo.......a no no for my car and it will repaired properly with steel, it is some not easy work but I feel the price justifies the work needed. The car has not let me down and I have spent hours under the blocked up car and considering i live in Canada where they love to use salt, besides minor rust...
:nice:
no hidden surprises...oops I forgot one leaky brakeline. I am in the process of
restoring this car removing parts one at a time to clean wire brush and paint
them down to cleaning and oiling each bolt. I plan on putting any performance
mod within reason as I comlete this project. I wish I would have taken pics
from the start but I never realized with digital and a computer how easy it is
to save and print all for free. As for the price.......$375 Canadian
That is about $225-$250 American on any given day ,I think I lucked out
and since the guy offered me a nice big tach with shift light for dirt cheap
I had to accept that too. The car is now registered to me and is 100% legitimate.

Considering the exhaust system alone is $1000 American plus tax I figure it
is worthwhile to slowly build this car into something I will appreciate and
enjoy for a long, long time, and with the money I didn't pay can be spent
doing it the way I want, with no sacrifices...it has been a great experience
so far but as I said I want to do it right.

I just had to tell my story cause of the quote I hope you find a good deal
and good luck.
