Well last winter I tore apart my car to start building the new engine combo. I sold the motor and all my parts and the money went towards buying a house instead of my project. But Now I have a house to show for it so I guess its all good. So I have gotten the itch to fix my car recently and have decided that my 5.0 wasn't exactly the most fuel effecient car once I started modding it and I found a good deal on a 2002 gt 5 speed donor car that I picked up. It has 550 cams in it already as well as an sct tuner and a roush guage cluster that I got. The guy said he put the cams in the wrong side and bent some valves so i figure no big deal I can fix that. Well it all went south when I took it apart. Here is what I found. I still believe I will be alright even after I get it fixed it just sucks it turned out like this. But hey what can u expect when you only paid 1800 for the car.

Well I went in with the assumption that all it needed was some head work but I was prepared for the motor to be trashed. I guess its not too bad when I think about it. It only did that to one piston and the block isn't messed up at all so I should be thankful for that. I was just hoping that it was just the valves. I was having the heads completely gone through anyways so having that little bit cleaned up isn't gonna cost that much extra. And it was only one piston thank god all the other seem to be fine.

Time to hit the salvage yards for an '01-up Crown Vic engine. Or better yet, an '02-'05 Explorer engine.

Put some forged rods and pistons in it and send your heads to Nick at Modularheadshop - MHS and problem solved.

Im gonna put the bottom end back the way it was. It already has upgraded I beam rods and a different crank in it. I picked up a new piston an rings from ford today for 70.00 for the one hole that is damaged. Taking it to the machine shop on friday. Will be no more than 200 to get it checked out and put back together. The heads are getting patriot performance springs and adjustable cam gears put in because of the cams. Motor will have 42# injectors, professional products upper plenum and throttle body, C&L intake, pypes long tube headers, off road x pipe, mac mufflers, I have an IRS setup going in the car with upgraded diff and braces with 3.55 gears, roush performance guage cluster, polyurethane motor and transmission mounts, and a 150 shot of nitrous. Will be updating on the thread once the build starts again. Have all my parts already just getting time to work on the car is a big problem with my own house and a full time job. Here is the link where my original starting thread will be completed.

Are you taking the guys word for it that it has different rods and crank than original, or do you know for certain?? Seems strange to me that someone would go to the trouble of tearing down the bottom end in order to upgrade the rods and crank, yet leave the original pistons...the most fragile part of the combination in place.

The rest of the car looks just as bad as the motor does...But at least it could be undone.

Yeah tell me about it. I don't mind the wheels but the tires are way too small on them. The front bumper, headlights, sideskirts, and rear bumper extension came off before i started working on the car because I couldn't stand to look at it any longer. I have a new rear bumper going on the car as well as factory side skirts, lights, and bumper. Gonna sell it as a roller when I get done. As for the crank and rods yeah. I checked them out when I took it apart. They are upgraded.

Don't mean to put you on the spot here....but how do you know? What brand are they? Got any pics of them? Telling us they're upgraded doesn't really say much.

I don't mean to sound like I'm doubting you, but again, it makes no sense for the previous builder to address the rods and crank, but keep the stock pistons?

In any case...you do realize that any rod and piston upgrade made will require a rebalance of the crankshaft, right?

Not a bad price for the car, but man I definitely would have expected that. First of all looking at the body kit would make me worry, second tried to install cams himself and SERIOUSLY f'ed it up. Next he tells you its only a bent valve and he hasnt even taken the car apart? Not sure if I would have trusted his "opinion". But it has potential for that price either way. I would scrap the motor and look for another short or long block.

Perhaps...but the guy doing the quick sale doesn't bothe with upgraded rods and crank....he just replaces them with stockers. My guess is that the entire short block is stock and the O/P may have just been led to believe otherwise.

Only pictures of said rotating assembly will tell for certain though.

Ok I will have more pics this afternoon. I have decided since it is just the one piston and rings that I will just replace that one. I have looked over all the other parts and they seem to be fine. I ordered one piston and a set of rings from ford today and total was 70 bucks. I figured I will hone the cylinder a little and install the new piston and rings and go from there.

Internal pics. Also upon closer observation under good light I now can see two marks in the cylinder wall from the wrist pin. I don't know if I can fix it myself or not now.

Next question is I have found a 1995 lincoln mark 8 motor with 92k on it for 300 dollars. The questions is will the shortblock on it work with the PI heads. I know the pistons are dome top and not dish pistons. Any help would be appreciated.

I hate to say I told you so, but thats a factory stock rotating assembly you've got there. Nothing special about the rods, or the crankshaft.

In other words....you're not selling yourself short by ditching the entire engine.
