I bought a GoPro video camera for my road trip this summer (driving to CA from Detroit on Route 66). Thought I would do some testing of the camera with some external microphones for sound capture. It's a little long...gets cooler at around 2:45. Let me know what you think!

What external mic are you using? Sounds good with very little wind noise. And where did you mount it?

Hey, thanks!

I am using a cheapy Radio Shack omnidirectional tie-clip microphone. Item #33-3013. I used a Radio Shack 20ft. extension cord so I can mount the camera anywhere on the car and run the mic out to the back. In this video, the mic is placed right above the license plate. It's actually dangling just over the edge of the bumper at the very top the license plate "opening."

I found this to be too close to the exhaust, and the sound had some "static" to it in the recording. I didn't like this, so I did a new test. I placed the camera in the front bumper opening. The mic was placed just over the rear spoiler, just above the fake gas cap in the center of the trunk lid. The mic has a foam cover over it to protect from road noise. I've noticed tire noise at times, more than wind noise. The foam tie-clip mic windscreen (pack of 4) was also from Radio Shack.

I'm using the "skeleton" housing from GoPro for the camera case. This has the exposed ports that give you access to the mic jack on the side.

I'm more impressed with the audio of this recent mic placement. The video, however, I was not. I placed the camera in the bottom grille opening, and mounted it from the "top" which resulted in the camera "bouncing." I think I will try to mount it to the bottom of the opening that way it's more stable.

Hope this helps.

I've tried mounting directly to the bumper (where a front license plate would sit) between the upper & lower and it seemed to work nicely - no movement of the camera. I don't have a external mic though, and I got a lot of fan noise. The intake noises did sound decent though.

I have a micover fuzzy cover for the gopro that does a pretty good job of elminating the wind noise. When I first tried the base camera, the wind noise was really bad.

The paint looks really good in that clip, by the way.

Thanks. The paint was actually kinda dirty. The mirrored effect is kinda weird and cool at the same time.
