Got a 95 t5 transmission in my 93...I need to change the bearing retainer? Which one?

Well the shaft that the throwout bearing rides on is "broken" off and is lose. I suspect that has something to do with my slipping clutches that I have always had a problem with.

What needs to be done? Don't I need to shim it when I replace the entire bearing retainer?

The bearing retainer just slides over the input shaft right...anybody got a write-up on the proper way to install them?

I did a search on summit and this came up for the 1995 model:

FMS-M-7050-B

Then this came up for the 1993 model:

FMS-M-7050-A

On my old T-5, I purchased a steel bearing retainer (FMS) and had my tranny shop shim it. I'm sure people have done it but I didn't want to have to pull out my trans again for a incorrectly shimmed retainer. Either way, definately get the steel retainer.

So why is there two different steel retainers on summit?

One for a 93 and one for a 95?

The SN95 has a longer input shaft, so I might assume that is why there is a difference. Your input shaft might have been swapped (from the 95 version to a fox version) but I am no expert (this is my thinking aloud - not any definitive knowledge). I dont know if people have come up with a way to use the SN95 input shaft with a big shim or something, to make it work in a fox (tossing out ideas here).

You do shim the retainer for about no endplay - some guys go for a hint of drag when the shaft is spun. And dont dump the input shaft or you can loose all the bearings.

FWIW, Rick has had some really good posts on R/R in the past, so if this thread doesnt yield what you are lookin for, hit Rick up in an email or via the tele perhaps.

The previous owner told me he changed out the input shafts. Never asked him for detail on that though...I'm just wondering which one I should get...me confused

I would hold the input-shaft static (hold it still) when you remove the bearing retainer. Otherwise, the shaft can sometimes try and come out with the bearing retainer - that aint nice.

I really dont know what the norm is on doing the 94-95 trans swap into a fox is - you very well could have a fox bearing retainer and input shaft. Sorry to not have any better idea David.

Maybe this weekend I can get some part numbers off the tranny and go from there...

Very true. Dumping all the little rollers out of back of the input shaft down into the trans isn't fun.
