I just bought my 02 gt with a paxton. It has 7k original miles on it. I know if i do much as far as moding it, i will approach 400 hp. i have been told this is getting towards the risky end of the stock 4.6L what do i need to do to be safe, while considering that i dont have unlimited income? Mahle crank/piston/rod kit? Just rod and pistons? What do you all think? Thanks alot!

i would go with a forged rotating assembly if you planning on adding more power.

honestly, yes you will...and shortblocks aren't cheap...

cobra crank, forged rods & pistons should be all you need...several brands are out there. my friend has had good luck with his probe pistons, though i prefer JE...

Yup, I just found out the hard way. I'm shopping for a good forged long block setup now =( I used mine for open track so I guess being at WOT for long periods of time wasn't too good for the stock block.

if your going near 400HP you better start saving money, for a forged short block. I had a friend blow his stock motor on his GT this weekend he was pushing 413RWHP now he has to start saving money for a new short block.

the rods and pistons are the definate weak point. once you approach 600rwhp the non-cobra crank is the weak point.

If you have a good tune, and you don't go in go WOT in 5th at 30mph, you should be fine where you're at. 400rwhp with a good tune is fine. 450 with a superb tune is probably fine too.

Bad tunes = grenaded engine.

I'm stock at 391.3rw and possibly over 400 with the x -pipe. Use a shift light. Watch the rpm's .I shift at 5500. Like sgarlic stated a good tune is key. Stay on the safe side. RICH is good-LEAN is mean
