Hey...

After only 2 weeks with my O\R H-pipe, I got caught...

I was going to my hockey game then that SQ cop pulled me on highway, i was like what the heck, i was driving at like 10km\h above the speed limit, at that moment, I knew it was my exhaust...

So he said:

Cop: Do you have cats ?
Me: umm I dunno, i bought the car like this.

He said umm okay, lemme check.
He checks and see that my mid-pipe is shiny and stuff, so can't do much...

Cop : you have no cats, 160$ ticket....
Me: HEY WTF why don't you stop civic with fartcans it pollutes my damn EARS
Cop: Well your sound is very nice but you polluates way too much, I was behind you and I was choking, it's insane
Me: Well, damn the civics, its worse, blah blah
Cop: I know, i hate those, but they have anti-pollution system, we cant do much about this

I was :

So, what can I do except change back to stock ? I want to keep that sound, fake cats, is it possible ? How do I do this... ?

Thanks guys

I had a similiar incident recently. I peeled out in a parking lot (I know really stupid) and I got pulled over. The cop told me I was beeing stupid and I knew that I got caught red handed so I was nice. Then he tells me my exhaust is illegal. I told him that I bought everything street legal. He told me no. He said if he can hear my exhaust over my engine then it is illegal. I didn't say anything but what the hell do you call a harley or a fart can import. Also the exhaust is the engine! Whatever. He let me go and then he said if he ever saw me again doing stupid stuff he would tow my car and impound it untill I paid a fine and fixed it. WOW, a little harsh I thought. I am keeping my exhaust the way it is but am just going to be on very good behavior. In your case though you are already busted and either need to purchase some cats or you could weld some metal to your pipes to look like cats. I am assuming you do not have to pass emissions. Good luck

I'd say get a cated high flow pipe... it will not sound as good. You could always pay the ticket and move on??? Thats one good thing about Florida, no emission laws.

I got pulled over last week for not having a front license plate. The sheriff asked where my front plate was and I replied, "On the front of the car." He bought the dumb act and that plate must of fallen off. Anyways, I think I'm home free and he asks for license and proof of insurance. I pulled out both and then he points out that the insurance card was expired. Damnit. I had the new insurance cards on the coffee table at home. He gives me a $237 ticket for not carrying proof of insurance. Christ, I offered to call my agent and he said its the law to carry it....seems like you can not make an honest mistake.

First off, you have a different situation than I did, but if you want to fight it, you could possibly have a case for unreasonable search of your car. If he asked to look under you car, and you let him...you're f***ed. If you have to have cats, then you need to add them, or you face this sort of thing again.

I had a situation in which a cop was going to write me a ticket for my exhaust being too loud. I simply asked him how loud my exhaust was, what the city ordinance said about how loud it could be, etc., and then politely explained that I simply wanted to rectify the situation so as to avoid this sort of unpleasantness, etc. About that time, a pack of Harleys comes roaring by...end of discussion, warning, and a have a nice day from the cop.

FYI...he had no answers for how loud, no clue as to tell me how loud it was, etc. That being said, I was not a smarta$$, did not get pissy, etc. I just calmly asked questions, etc.

As for what to do with your cats, those Bassani's in the new magazine are pretty sweet looking and from what the article said...sweet sounding.

Hax

He never said lemme check, he said i'll check under your car, wait a sec.

And yes, we MUST have cats here (we have no emission tests tough), so i can't debate it in court

the two times i have been pulled over in my stang....i shut it off immediately as soon as i pulled over and stopped. I know that without the cats they can just smell it and your f**cked. not to mention if u just leave the car turned on and its just idling there real loud. secondly u just have to pay attention...and not be accelerating when u are going past a cop. these cars are quite enough if u just pop the clutch in when going past cops. I havent gotten a ticket yet!! knock on wood!!!

Man, that sucks... I've been riding around without cats for tha past six months, at least, and I haven't even been pulled over for anything--even speeding! haha PA is getting stricter with the emissions testing so we'll see when June comes around (inspection expires :-() but until then, let the good times ROAR!

Exactly! Just because your locality does not have emissions testing does NOT mean you can take the cats off. Cats are covered by FEDERAL law, which supersedes State and local law.

Read all about it here: EPA Federal Catalytic Converter Laws

To the original poster - you are lucky that is the only fine you got. The Federal fine for removing cats is $2,500 per offense (meaning each cat) for a total possible fine of $10,000!!

Technically, according to Federal law, if the car came from the factory with cats, it needs to have cats - EVEN IF USED ONLY FOR RACING PURPOSES. The "off highway use only" clause is complete BS, it's never enforced, but that IS how the law reads.

I dont think thats true...if the car is only used for racing...wether it be track or drag strip, you dont need cats. thats why they call it an off-road h or x pipe. not off-highway. they mean that if u want to run their pipe the car cannot be driven on any road that isnt a track or dragstrip. you are right that it is a federal law and does over rule the local laws and the fine is outrageous for taking them off, but if the car is not driven on roads...hence the off road name, then u dont need to run cats. look at all the pro and semi pro drag cars running open headers....i dont think they are breaking the law and getting fined?!! so the deal is that this kid got lucky with the cop that busted him and it could have been a hell of a lot worse, but that the price we all pay for that sound!!!!!!!

Dude, i know that, everytime I see a cop I put it on neutral... and when he stick my ass behind me, i was shifting at like 1500rpm very quietly, but he smelled my car... damn clear weather tonight

OH and remember guys, i'm in CANADA, it's still illegal but the fines are not the same.

Sorry, it's true. Check with the EPA. If it came with cats FROM THE FACTORY, it's supposed to have them. Like I said, I've never heard of it being enforced in a racing situation, though.

Well, those are specially constructed RACE CARS THAT NEVER HAD CATS, so they didn't have them from the factory...............
