Got caugh for my exhaust, 160$ ticket, need help guys!

Anyone know what the age of a car is that you dont have to pass emissions anymore?

It's 20 years, atleast in Ontario it is. So this year if your car was an 84, you wouldnt have to e-test your car ever again, but if your bringing a car on the road thats 84 or older, it has to pass once, then never again (i think).

I believe the EPA law states that you can replace the factory cats after 50,000 miles...

Only on a car made before 1995. After 1995, it's 80,000 miles. AND only if "a legitimate need for replacement has been established and appropriately documented."

You are right.

If a car came from the factory with cats it has to have cats to drive legally on a PUBLIC road.

That's what I thought, too - until I did some digging.......I'm trying to find the link........

The EPA isn't as concerned with recreational OFFROAD vehicles because they are an enormous source of revenue.

That is changing right now, too. They are trying to get cats on offroad vehicles, snow mobiles, jet skis, motorcycles (on and off road), farm equipment, trains (!), buses, and even lawn mowers.

I didn't even know that you can't legally de-cat a car even if it will only be used off-road. Part of that has to do with the fact that I don't have a race-only car. Anyhoo, I did a ton of research before I bought my exhaust system too.

here is the solution to your problem:
put on your stock pipes. go pass emissions. take the certificate to court with you, say the cop must have missed the cats

In my case, my stock cats had holes rusted through them and i doubt they were working at all, therefore it should be alright that i put on an o/r h pipe. Don't ya think????

i like the heat shield idea. How would you get caught if you had those welded to your o/r pipe??? if somehow the cops found out they were fake, you could say that you bought the midpipe from someone and thought that the cats were real. how would that be your fault???

NO. You CAN NOT LEGALLY put an o/r pipe on. You are supposed to replace the cats. Period.

OK, say you welded the heat shields on, and got pulled over into a road-side sniffer test (Yes, they DO have it), and they found that you welded the heat shields on..............that would be a hefty fine, too.

Easily your fault. Damn, read the info at the links I posted..........it is ILLEGAL to install USED cats, too - unless they have been "properly tested and labeled".

Read what I said. It is a POSSIBLE fine of up to $10,000. Just because you never heard of it means it's not real????

I also said that just because they may not necessarily be reinforcing the law doesn't mean that they can. You said it yourself...then we all probably have nothing to worry about.

I am not sure if anyone has suggested this but I will throw it out to you. I took my cat off of my truck, cut it open and gutted it. Then I ran a piece of straight pipe inside the cat from one opening to the other and then welded the casing up and put the heat shield back on. You can not tell. It is amazing, I fooled the Exhaust intstallers and one officer asked if I had cats on and I said check if you like, he did and said ok looks good. Just an idea.
