Got it apart today, but I don't think it is worth rebulding.

1. The camshaft has actually eaten its way through the bearing and may have been rubbing into the block itself.

2. The cylinder bores on the driver's side bank look like they had core shift during casting and are thin on one side and thicker on the other.

3. All the rod and main bearings are well past the worn stage.

4. The crank journals look pretty scored. Probably from all the parts of the disinigrated cam bearing running through them.

Looks like a trip to the local pick and pull for a good rebuildable shortblock.

:nonono:

wow! i worked in a racing engine machine shop and we would get truckloads of junkyard beat engines for block cores ...those were always in better shape than that. they never had a cam bearing failure like that. high mileage sludge motors but not like that. must have lost oil pressure.

The block has very little sludge in it at all. Oil pressure was in the lower third of the normal band. There was no ridge buildup either. I pushed the pistons out by hand. Wow, what happened?

what car ? you have so many listed.

sorry to hear about the loss but if you ride them hard they sweat

I just have the last 5.0 car in the list. I never got a chance to ride this hard, it was a project car that "Just needs a clutch and a carburetor". That was until I got it to start.

Update: That is not the only camshaft bearing like that!

i know where you can get a good roller shortblock motor from a wrecked car for 115 plus shipping here in spring,tx. i got mine and they found that it had just been rebuilt so it was 100 even and i picked it up. runs great and the insides look super new. 1 877 844 9832 free to call.

Thanks for the info, but anything I install will be new or a rebuild (I only want to have to do it once).

Well back from the Wrecking Yard. I found a 1988 Fullsize wagon with a 5.0 EFI in it. They are going to pull it Monday or Tuesday and I can pick it up after that.

i thought you only wanted a rebuilt one or new. i guess you are talking about a van. you know it doesn't have a roller cam right, but you can swap everything over to it from yours. and do they have a warranty because the company i told you about warranties their motors that they pull and sell. something you might think about.
