Grease in my tri-ax shifter?

I just bought a nice used tri-ax shifter and noticed that it was covered in grease. When I looked down inside, next to the rear stop bolt, i could see that they had packed the rear half with grease. Steeda's website doesn't say anything about greasing it like this....I'm tempted to clean it all out.

What do you think?

Mine came packed with grease new, leave it there, or clean out and replace with new clean grease. It will prevent wear and tear and also acts as somewhat of a seal to keep trans fluid in.
