Greasing a cam

Do I have to grease the cam to put it in my motor? I know people do grease them but is it that important?

I know you don't want to gouge the lobes or the bearing but I would think if done carefully you would not have a problem without greasing.

Greasing a cam isn't as important with roller cams. I believe you can just use ordinary motor oil on the cam, just to make sure there's some lubrication upon startup.

I used white lithium grease for the install. It'll dissolve into the motor oil.

Just use your engine oil for lube for a HR camshaft.

Assembly lube is preferred because it will stay where you put it, until engine oil from the pump comes to save the day. White lithium grease would probably be ok. If you have nothing else, and you'll be starting the car up soon after installing the cam, engine oil will do.

I'm not sure I would use regular grease. (Like wheel bearing or boat trailer.) It is quite thick and may not be able to be pushed out by the oil until the engine warms up. Not good.

I will just use some motor oil. I wont have it put in the car till mid summer or so, but I can always drop some oil in the lifter holes before it goes in.

My buds and I have for the most part always used STP engine treatment as our assem. lube. If anyone has ever seen/used the stuff it is like cold honey, thick as all get out and really holds on.

We asked our local top head porter/custom guy when a buddy had some head work done and he said that is the exact same stuff he uses.

No problems to date with any of the motors...well exept for the 355 in a K5 that got dunked under water and had to sit under water for 30-40min until another bud could tow it out.

As alluded too, I would only use engine oil if you plan on firing it up within a few days. After that, I would use something with a little more substance - Assembly Lube or the equivalent.

That's what I've always used too. Never had any problems.
