Yep thats right, my pos T-5 went out. I was driving it and there was smoke coming from around the shifter, that was going on for awhile, and the shifter was really really hot. Then I went to down shift and it wouldnt go into 3rd, and it normally grinds in 3rd, then it wouldnt go into 2nd. So I hit 4th and drove for awhile, and tried 5th again and it made a loud clank and then a bunch of other noises, and it wouldnt go into ANY gear. Thankfully I had just taken an exit ramp off the highway and I was able to coast it off the the side of the road, and a gas station was in walking distance and I called my dad and we towed it home. Fun times.

That's some bad news. Sounds like it was running with no gear oil.
I have a WC T5 in my coupe and have had no problems with it yet. Or should I say I didn't cause it to have any problems yet?

Been there, did that, didn't like it. My WC T-5 uses B&M synthetic stick shift gear lube SAE 75W90. Big difference in shifting and no problemo's.

My drivetrain uses all synthetic oils. Nothing but the best for my II's.

I'm not sure what might have happened to your T-5 but hopefully it can be rebuilt. I just done the T-5 conversion about a year ago... I was amazed how expensive it was; the darn thing cost me more than anything I've bought for the car yet.

I was thinking it would be cheaper just to get a T5 from the junkyard as opposed to rebuilding it.

You should be able to get one from a late 5.0 for about 4 to $500. from a reliable yard.

We ran 80W90 in my friends' '83 5.0 and it seemed to shift just fine. But after he had the WC T-5 rebuilt we put the mercon back in it and for some reason, it seems like it was stickier through the gears and wouldn't speed shift very well. Can't really explain that. You'd think the thicker fluid would cause more problems...

Did you compare how much thicker the heavier oil was at operating temperature, or just at room temperature? The difference in oil "weight" is far less noticeable at 200 degrees than it is at 70 degrees.

Yeah, it was room temperature, about 90* to be exact. But I see what you're saying.
Yeah i can believe the thining out as temperature increases. Matter of fact, the '77 Cobra II I bought in Albuquerque, the previous owner had pumped 80W90 into the engine to hide a serious rod knock and aid low oil pressure. I found this out while doing an oil change after adding in 10W40. Man... knocked and burned oil like a sum-b****. Gave me a good excuse to yard out the engine and add a little more fire to it.
