I currently own a 3.8L 1996 mustang. I was searching for a way to make my exhaust sound great and make people think "wtf was that" when I pass by. This mod doesnt really need to pass inspection so it doesnt need to be "street legal". Can someone hook me up with some ideas as the exhaust is the last thing I need to upgrade before I am really happy with the car. Thanks in advance and thank you for your time.

Aren't you just the pessimist? There's a few people on this forum with great sounding V6's.

na, they dont sound great just decent. I mean i guess if you compare it to stock or some 4 bangers out there sure it might sound great but if you compare it to a stock 4.6 or so there is nothign amazing about it.

Run your exhaust straight from the header pipes..... That'll get their attention. ....Kidding

My daily driver is the same year as yours.I've messed around with the exhaust for ages and it seems quite difficult to get a good sound out of it.One of the main problems are the catalytic converters. There are 4 of them suckers on there. And each one of them acts as a mini muffler. They drastically change the way the exhaust sounds. With them on,it makes it sound allmost like a 4 cylinder. It has that stuffed up "poppy sound".Removing them gives you more power and a much better sound, but also plays bigtime games with the O2 sensors. The problem sits with the O2's just after the last 2 cats. There is no work around on this unless you want your car running super rich and blowing black smoke out the pipes.Unless there is a mod chip that'll fix this problem. You could also invest in ultra high flow converters but they are pricey, and I also do not know if they are much better in the way of sound restriction.

Single chamber 40 series Flowmasters on a dual exhaust setup with no cats and an aftermarket X-pipe makes it sound a hell of a lot better. The X-pipe gives it a more unusual "tunnel like" sound over the H-pipe.IMO,I like loud beefy sounding exhausts with a slight complexity to it.You may prefer otherwise. The stock S-shaped tailpipe gives the exhaust that resonating Flowmaster sound. That is how you get that sound.Take the S-pipe off and run a turndown from the muffler/s and you get a much deeper beefy sounding tone.

Try this site for chance..... www.mustangexhaust.com

They have sound files from several different exhaust setups on there.

Hope this helps..

an aftermarket X-pipe .....where can I find one? Or are they all custom made if so who makes them puppies I have not been able to find one for a oo V6. P.S will the flowmasters provide enough compression (not back pressure) for it not to loose HP

Any exhaust shop can make one for you. And you shouldn't have any problem with the Flows.

I hate the way flowmasters aka rustmasters sound on V6's. They sound ricey in the higher RPMs.

Go MAC or Bassani.

I agree, they get that popping noise when you are in the higher rpm's....i think it sounds like crap..personally. I love my MAC flowpath's...they're great. I had my X pipe custom welded

I have the Mac duals and I think they sound great. In fact, yesterday a guy thought I had a GT when I rolled up. They sound nice from low RPMs up until like 3000 (which is where my cars shifts normally). If I'm romping on it, it gets a noticeable higher pitch above 3000 (obviously since its a 6)
