My 5.0 does this with the tremec and I have heard of alot of other T5's doing that. I have to put it in 5th and then to reverse or it will grind. It actually will not even go into the gear until I go into 5th. I don't know, give that a try

same problem with my 2000 Gt witha T45... could be nothing or it could be the syncronizer needing to be replaced...

no problem at all. T5's reverse isn't synchromesh so all you have to do is put it in 5th and then reverse (actually any gear will work, but 5th is right by reverse). no grind. g'day

ps for those inquisitive minds, putting it in 5th will synchronize the transmission since reverse can't. once it's synchronized, this eliminates the grind.

Or just push the clutch pedal in and wait 7 seconds.

Same thing happens in my car and my dad's truck. I don't really think it's too much of a problem, or atleast I hope it isn't. After a while I kind of just learned how to maneoveur it into reverse without it grinding, mind you, it still does every now and again. But, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

once again, IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. T5 REVERSE IS NOT SYNCHROMESH. YOU HAVE TO EITHER WAIT FOR IT TO SLOW DOWN AND SYNCHRONIZE ITSELF (like crovax said) OR SYNCHRONIZE IT JOOSELF.

I drive a lot of cars at my job (lot tech) and I do the 5-R shuffle on all of them. Force of habit, I guess....T5 reverse isn't synchronized and it's straight cut, so it needs effort to go in and it whines. Just one of those odd things.

not SYNCHRONIZED. "Synchromesh" is a trademark originally of Cadillac's and now of GM (since they wn Cadillac).

There is nothing unusual about the T5. All manually shifted gearboxes with a nonsynchronized gearset will experience grinding and difficulty shifting into that gearset. On other similar transmissions Reverse is even worse, need we mention CHRYSLER and smashed up reverse gear teeth. On older tractors with nothing but straight cut slider gears in the entire gearbox, it takes a great deal of skill to shift smoothly while in motion.

One way to lock in such a gear is to stop the transmission completely (in fact your only choice when changing output direction of rotation), which is what you are doing by shifting into 5th first with the car motionless (synchronized 5th gear stops the transmission without grinding). Some cars have a synchronized reverse so this is not necessary.
