Grinding sound in rear end...

Hello everyone...it's time I got more active on here. I have been a bit of a troll I guess but I have learned so much from this site! Thank you all for your knowledge! I have had a sort of grinding/howling sound coming from the rear end of my Stang for a while now and it bothers me. The sound is present regardless of the gear I am in and seems to increase with RPM's. A buddy of mine said it might be the carrier bearings? I have done plenty of other mods but maybe it is time to get those 4.10's or 3.73's! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you ever had any work done on your rear end? How many miles? Original diff lube in there?

if the sound increases with rpm then its a problem with the tranny, if increases with speed, then its a problem with the rearend

Yes, the sound seems to be more according to the speed of the car...not necessarily RPM's like I suggested. The car has 56,000 and yes, the original lube...time for a change I guess? Thanks guys!

I have the same exact sound you're talking about. Started around 15,000 miles. I'm at 76,000 now. Still nothing bad's happened. I'm really trying to make it an excuse to get my 4.10s, but I need to know that the sounds will go away when I do.

Probably axle bearings or carrier bearings. Got the same sound at 23k on our Saleen. Going to get gears on asap with a rebuild kit for the rear- they run around $100 for all shims and bearings.
