there is a salvage yard up the road from me that has a totaled explorer 5.0 v8. what is the diffrence between the explorer head and a gt-40p head if any. Would there be any need to mod them.

I went to look to see if the yard had any parts for my GF's car and seen one of the employees taking off the intake. So i went and asked him how much for the heads and he told me that if take them off i could have them for 250. I told him that i would be back the next day if i wanted them.

should i buy them? I didn't think the iron heads were worth that much HP for the trouble of doing that kind work? I have a gt-40 intake getting ready to go on, and i just bought a 65mm TB and a MAM and filter system. Will these parts work together well or should i hold out a year or so and get a set of tfs heads?

let me know guys

They will work together well. The explorer heads are gt40p heads. You will need "p" headers though other than that they are bolt on. If you could get a deal on the intake get it to. There isn't much difference at all between the explorer intake and the gt40. The explorer lower is the same except for the act sensor bung is drilled in the gt40. That doesn't matter much in a sn95 but in a fox it has to be drilled. At the very least get a good price on the intake and resale it.:)

For $250, you wont find a cheaper price. Like was said above, you will have to find P specific headers for those heads. MAC makes a P specific shorty but you can use their longtubes on them too. If you are planning on just doing a mild sub 300whp combo the GT40 stuff is the best way to go. If you want serious power, you are either going to have to go with a better head or do some serious port work to those P heads which will leave you rather light in the wallet. As you can see from my sig i have a set of highly ported and polished GT40 cobra spec irons fully worked; $850 worth with high lift springs, bigger valves , etc, but the only reason i got them was because i got a killer deal on them. If i didn't get that deal i would be saving for some TFS's or some AFR's.

Find out when the Explorer was made. I'm getting GT-40's from a 96 wich aren't P's. They started the P head late in 97 I think. I think we're both in the same boat as far as the deal goes :D I might be getting mine this weekend. :banana:
