GT-40P Heads/Intake

So I found a guy selling some GT-40P Heads and U/L Intake Manifold off of a '98 Mountaineer. Motor is good, truck is wrecked. 130K On the heads. I know I would have to get new headers for the P series heads, but I can get the duo for $200. Good deal? and if I get the full set, is there anything I would have to do? Should I ask him to get the MAM with the FI as well?

How much does a machine shop generally charge to refresh heads?

Thanks
Nick

The heads will almost certainly need to be rebuilt, so set aside some money for a fresh valve job, valve seals and possibly guides depending on their mileage. Upgrading the valve springs will be a must. So coun't on sinking at least another $200 into the heads.

The intake will need to have the #5 runner tapped for that ACT sensor. Otherwise, bolt it on and go. And of course...no EGR with the mid-97 and up intakes. If you want to retain your EGR set up, you'll need to find a '96 to early-'97 manifold.

I will just eliminate the EGR. Something I was planning on cleaning up the bay anyway. Can't I also relocate the ACT before the TB, rather than tapping the runner for it?

Either way, for $200 for both, its more than worth it?

You sure can. The engine will probably run a little more advanced in the timing since it won't be as subject to heat soak as the sensor will in the runner, but that's always a plus for power. Just keep your initial ignition timing on the conservative side.

And yes....$200 for both is a great investment. You'll probably pick up somewhere in the neighbourhood of 30-35hp. Even if you do end up sinking another $200 into the heads on top fo it all, that's still a pretty good back for the buck if you ask me.

Yeah I have been looking everywhere for this combo, because I have an E303 cam and am starving for air. Useless without H/I I know lol.

If you get the intake...see of the injectors are included as well. The explorer 19# are supposedly better than the fox injectors.

I'd say $200 for the heads and $75-100 for the intake is going rate. Throttle body and injectors with the intake would be a bonus.

FWIW when I ran the explorer injectors my car ran super rich. I read somwhere that they actually flow closer to 20lbs
not sure if that is enough to make a difference but they gave me a hell of a time.
I would say that 200 for the lot is a hell of a deal. That 35 hp really wakes the 5.0 up. Throttle response is better and mine climbed higher in the rpm range as well. It wont set the streets on fire but its a night and day difference.

That's all I would be looking for. For around $500, when all said and done, I should be closer to running lower 8's (in the 8th) and that is what I am looking towards. Doing all my suspension work as we speak. No point in having power if you can't put it to the ground lol. Ran a 9.5 last time I was there, and that was with a bad clutch, not being able to get into second right away, stock 225 tires and first time taking it to the track lol.
