GT CONVERT HAS NO TORQUE!!! HELP!!! COMON GUYS!!

I have a 1990 Mustang Gt Convertible...I took my friends advise and installed Mac 1 5/8 unequal length headers, underdrive pulleys, BBK X-Pipe with NO CATS, smog pump was taken off. In fender free flow air filter, Hot coil, aftermarket cap and rotor, and aftermarket cables. It still has the stock mufflers.

After installing all of this..the car has lost most of its low end torque. To back it out of the garage I have to accelerate it so it will pick up speed. If I downshift into 2nd..it gets really slow...On the highway...ITS GREAT...but this low end torque deal sucks...

I have been told everything, Install a 3:55 or 3:73 rear end to compensate...Take off the Mac 1 5/8" headers and go with 1 1/2" instead since it is a convertible and is heavier...some say...I should have never gone with the 2 1/2" X-pipe....

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE!!!!!!

If you actaully lost any low end torque from that exhaust system, it would be soley from the 1 5/8" headers. People throw around the term "backpressure" a lot, but that is the wrong word. We want to talk about velocity. A higher velocity helps 'suck' exhaust gasses out of the engine at low rpms, but can choke the engine at high rpms. Your 1 5/8 header may be to big and doesn't allow the velocity at low rpms to make good torque.
First thing I would do is finish up the exhaust. Put a descent muffler on. The best flowing engine is only as good as the biggest restriction, so putting on some better mufflers should help a lot.
Then, look into gears. They will make driving around town a lot more pleasant in your heavy vert.

gears should have been the first thing for a vert. or one of em.

Gears and subframe connectors. I agree about the exhaust, you opened it up to far for a stock AOD engine. The stock headers would have been better, but I wouldn't go back if you going to continue to mod the engine.

convertibles need gears...i agree, should have gotten a catback before you touched the headers.

Definitely throw some steeper gears in there.
