so I was looking though the FRPP catalog and most everything from wheels to flywheel bolts have an asterick next to it, meaning that its for off-road applications in CA.

Now, seeing as how wheels wouldnt do anything for emissions. Why is the GT 40 crate illegal because of the cam? Would the GT40 pass if all the emissions crap was put back on? What about the "production assembly" short block? Its got the asterick too but its "production" which is what I dont get.

Ford Racing is just covering its backside. The GT40 crate engine is the 5.0, right? It probably comes with a B cam for manual trans cars and an E cam for autos. The B is not smog legal, which means it doesnt have an Exemption Order number. Also, just because something IS legal doesnt mean it wont affect your car's smog reading. Put a smog leagal cam and all the emissions equipment on the GT40 and it will *probably* pass. The stock production bock is just that - stock production. A factory replacement for your old 5.0. I wouldnt worry about that passing. This is exactly why I got my '68. I could put a diesel in it if I wanted.

I agree though; some of their classifications are retarded. Its like seeing road race wheels in a catalog that say "for race use onl - not street legal". With that in mind, a race-quality wheel is going to be a hell of alot tougher than a stock one.

yea but your cars over 30 years old. Your emissions exempt.

I might just get the production block and go from there... I dont want/need alot of HP. The verts gonna be a DD.

Exactly my point .

I personally wouldnt worry about a mild stock-looking 351W getting through CA smog, but it would need some "concealing".

If you know you're going with aftermarket heads, do not get a stock longblock. Save the money and get a shortblock instead. A GT-40 headed early V8 Explorer engine is something to thing about too. Just consider your ultimate goals and go from there.
