I found a set of GT40 heads in the mustang mag the othere day. The company is Tri-state they want $598 for a pair that come with springs good up to a .550 lift which is good for my cam. Just built a 302 and it needs a set of heads to work right on it. The car only loves 93 and I have a bet with my buddy I can beat his STI.

Whatever hp you get from them over stock heads you'll give it back when you put the stock exhaust manifolds back on so you can get your spark plugs in. The P head has a relocated spark plug and it interferes with conventional headers.

You want power? Buy a set of 165cc AFR's.

Well, not quite. Theres headers out there that will clear. I dont know what brands offhand, Im sure someone will chime in. Considering the P heads are $600 vs. $1400 for AFRs, I think that leaves plenty of room for a new set of headers with money left over.

And good luck beating the STI.

I think 69/70 351w exhaust manifolds will clear the plugs properly. If you port those out right they will flow as well as aftermarket headers and wont crack.

any info on the port work needed for a set of 351w manifolds? i've got a couple sets in the garage i wouldn't mind playing with for the next sleeper project, along with a set D0OE heads that i've been itching to put a portin' on

Melvin's Classic Ford in conyers, GA carries sets for 65-66 mustangs with P heads. They are very nice quality and incidentally fit foxbody mustangs so I would imagine they fit other mustangs as well. Don't remember who made them however . . .

The set I saw at the shop were jet-hot coated and were around $300 or so (shorties).

The only combo off the top of my head was a 88 hatch.
ported GT-40p, ported cobra intake, 65mm BBK, e-cam with 1.7s, longtubes, off-road x-pipe with flowmasters dumped. T5 with 3.73s.

On slicks the car went some low 7.70s right at 90mph. The MPH was there to run a little better but the local track is about terrible.

And as far as D0OE heads, my falcon went some 8.60s at 84 with those heads stock, professional products air-gap, 670 street avenger, b-cam, longtubes and x-pipe with flowmasters.

The car probably made 220 or so rwhp at that point and could have made a lot more had I found out sooner the rib under the rotor was locking out the timing. Went to a dyno later and picked up 20rwhp with just 2 minutes of grinding it down with a die grinder.

I can take pictures of mine. They are in the trunk of my 67. I ended up not being able to use them with my cable clutch setup. If the pictures don't answer your questions I can ask the guy who ported the manifolds what was done exactly.

Maybe you can get headers.......

I stand corrected. My apologies.

When I tried to use a set in like '98 I couldn't find a set of early headers that would clear to save my life.

I got hooker comp headers on right now so they wont work at all. How different are the spark plug holes. is it worth putting these heads on. The cam I got is a voodoo cam the dur@50 is .227/.233 and the lift is .522/.538 so I need a set of heads to flow this

Well.....

Different enough where I think they won't work on the headers you have.

At least I'm not aware of anybody who got them to work.

This setup used to be DIRT CHEAP. You could get a complete set of heads from that jerk at (PM me if you want the name) for about $400 and NOBODY did it because you couldn't get the headers to fit.

BTW, any short headers that bolt on to a stock Fox chassis won't work in an early car.

I put an explorer motor with the GT40P heads in my friends 67 Cougar and we used a set of Ford Motorsport headers and they fit but you can't change the plugs without yanking the header. All we had to do was dimple the driver's side to clear the steering box.

Here are the pics. If you are wondering why they look half black half rusted its because I had them sand blasted and zinc coated but the zinc coating didn't stick to these anywhere neer as well as it did on my spindles. I think if I would have gone the extra mile and had them totally deburred that it would have come out nice but I didn't want to spend that kind of money on looks, especially on looks for exhaust manifolds....

couple of things,

porting cast iron is terrible. Plan on spending all day porting a set of exhaust manifolds like that. Be sure to bring the ear plugs.

As far as the early model P headers on a foxbody. I'll call melvins tomorrow . . . I am pretty sure the guy ended up using them on a 87-93 car.

Donkeyville......

Twice in the same thread. I'm wrong again.

The '64-66 cars can't use fox headers - at all. They won't fit inside the shock towers.

The '67 - later cars can. Sort of. Be made to work. Kinda.
