I agree. Camaros and Firebirds had superior drivetrains for years and were still being outsold by Mustangs in large quantities. It's about the whole package, and the GTO is a bit too "stealthy" in appearance to appeal to the very people who would care about the 400 horsepower engine.

yep, the mustang out sold the camarobirds (combined) by something like 3:1 right up until the end. It's styling that sells these cars, not power, for 90% of their target market.

The problem with this car was nothing more than stupid dealers with up to $10k markups when they came out.

They put a 05 GTO against a 05 Mustang Gt and the GTO one by only 2 tenths in the 1/4. Now the LS2 GTOs are a different animal.... running high 12s and low 13s with 405 HP

High 12's? I haven't seen them come close to that. I could believe 13's, with traction tires (slicks or ET Streets). I don't read Car and Driver and/or other mags of that genre. I only go to the track. You are going to need to spend some money to get them to go that quick. The power potential is probably there, but it will take some money to tap it. Of course, that could be done for the magazine test. It is a common practice. It's also common for the magazines to allow the manufacturers to test and report the performance.

Dream Car Garage did a test of carefully restored muscle cars and explained the cheating that occurred during the muscle car era. The program went on to test ten or so cars. The cars each ran a 1/4 mile three times with the same driver. Pains were taken to be sure all cars had factory tires, etc, "And they ran what they ran". One of the best car shows I've ever seen. Incidentally, the vaunted 450 hp Chevelle SS 454 ran only high 13's, about the same as the Buick GS and some other big blocks with a much lower hp rating. The Hemi Cuda ran low 14's.

It seems safe to assume that stock only refers to the engine .

A quick perusal of their drag racing forum suggests that most stock 2004's on street tires with a competent driver can break into the 13's easily enough, and 2005's are pretty easily mid-13 cars.

But probably not at Portland International Raceway . There is a lot to be said for a good track.

-Or at Pacific Raceway. But there are guys that run 12's with stock (long block) fox bodies too. "Stock" means different things to different people. The pure stock Mustang racers back east get 11's out of a "stock" fox body: stock heads (no porting) stock intake, etc.

I think it's a moot point no matter where you source data from . Driving skill alone can introduce a plus or minus 1 second variable. And the track surface can introduce another substantial variable. Then there is the weather. And the list goes on. It is a fun topic to banter about, but there is no truly "correct" answer IMO. Though it runs counter to much that is said on these forums, I think that quarter mile times (including trap speed) are no better than dyno's for comparing two cars. Perhaps worse.

I agree. There are many many variables. I don't know about the dyno analogy though. I think those things are for bench racing and tuning your own car -or checking a/f ratio. I need to get back to my trac loc so I can go to the track tomorrow and watch some more GTO's.

Frankly, I am sad to see it go. I like the stealth look myself (and here I drive a Canary '94 GT).

But the thing I think is the worst part is lack of competition. Competition breeds improvement. If it wasn't for the other manufacturers producing cars in the same class as the Mustang, you wouldn't see near as many improvements.

Dodge Charger? Dodge Magnum? Chevrolet Corvette? Ford GT? Panoz Esperante?

And Dodge is coming to market soon with the Challenger, and Chevrolet with the Camaro ... and both look like extremely worthy competitors for Mustang.

The magnum and charger are far from a sports car or muscle car, their only avaliable with a automatic, the may have a hemi, but neither one is going to handle as well as the GTO or the Mustang. The corvette is an awsome car, but it's 50K plus for the new Z06 and it still not the Camaro/Mustag niche kinda car...

The kinda cars that i think a lot of people whould like to see are the AWD Turbo focus, and the Australlian Typhoon, I6 turbo more of a touring STI killer kinda car, Not a Magnum(station wagon ) or a charger that are just cruisers......look how popular the old Supras are, seems like a no brainer for ford to import the Aussie stuff.

But it seems that the only kinda car we get like that are the Evo and Sti..

don't forget the Cadillac CTS-V is a rwd v8 6 speed. Far from a muscle car, but with high factory hp numbers (400) Mustang is not the only car out there for speed freaks that want a manual trans.
