Hey all, I'm new here. I just recently acquired a 1999 Mustang GT, and the previous owner had put a fiberglass (with carbon fiber overlay on top) hood on the car with about a 3 inch cowl. The hood wouldn't look too bad, if it wasn't for the fact that the back of the cowl (up by the windshield) is cracked on both sides of the cowl. It's not a HUGE eye sore, but it's noticeable if you're standing by the car. So I'd like to put another hood on it.

I really love the look of the newer GT500 hoods, and I found this hood, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with it and hopefully some better pictures. GTS-III Mustang Ram Air Hood (1999-2004)

Also, I was wondering about just putting factory style hood on it, but I don't like the 1999 "hoodscoops." Could I just put a GT hood on it from say a 2003 or 2004 (that actually has the raised looking scoop)? If so, does anybody know where I can find one?

The only other hood I like the looks of is the Cobra R style (with the scales going up the center facing the windshield).

The car is all blacked out, btw.

Id just get the cobra r or a factory hood...or maybe find someone that does bodywork and have your hood fixed... i have the factory non-scoopless hood laying in my garage if youre interested..

That hood looks really stupid.

Fix the one you have or put on a stock 99-04 hood. (Gt, Cobra, Cobra R, ect.)

Point taken guys. Thanks for the input. I've actually found a place online where I can get a Cobra R style hood cheaper anyway, and the more I look at them...the better they are looking.

Btw, anybody have any estimates on what it SHOULD cost to have a hood painted and installed at a body shop?

should be around $150-200 depending on prep work and quality...mine was painted for $150...look around and see if you can find any at home painters or a shop that will do it as a side job and you might get a cheaper price.. $200 is pushing it IMO but if its a good quality job then maybe it would be ok

Also, I think my mind is playing tricks on me with some of these pictures. The Cobra R (2000) hoods are more rounded, right? Unlike how a Cowl hood is more squared?

Cool, because the more I look at it, the less I like the more squared cowl hoods. I even like the factory hoods (like the 2003 and 2004), but since I gotta put a hood on anyway...I'd kinda like to have something a little more unique.

How does anyone think the Cobra R (2000) hood would look with a factory GT front bumper and chin spoiler?

She sounds wicked, but always dies at idle once warmed up. I'm going in for a tune on May 4th, so hopefully that will be corrected by the tuner

What impresses me most about these cams is what feels like a great abundunce of torque from 2500 - 5K rpm's. Usually you hear of aggressive cams giving a lot of top end but these things things seem to have a healthy midrange torque curve

What cams are you running??
I have a set of powerhouse regrinds, came out of 98cobra281's old setup, theyre supposed to be a little bit better then stage 2's just been to busy to get them in but ive been curious as to how they should feel untuned?

What are the specs on your regrinds?

I have MHS stage 2 NPI N/A cams. Duration: 225/228 Lift: 525/500 Centerline: 106/114 and LSA: 110

When she does idle it sounds f'kn awesome... real thumpy. Getting on it she pulls much harder from 2500 rpm's all the way to redline. As I said earlier though, I'm really impressed with the torque this thing makes in the midrange. I wasn't expecting that at all. Honestly it runs fine w/o a tune, it just doesn't idle at a stoplight and dies. I'm sure a tune will make it run better and be much more responsive but it certainly doesn't run badly.

this might sound dumb N8 but disconnect your pcv tube from the drivers side valve cover and fire up the car..might take a couple starts but it might actually idle without it hooked up...or if you get it idleing let it idle then unhook it.....i know everyone hates that idea and blah blah blah but i fought an idle issue for over a year and it turned out the crankcase pressure on my car was too much and needed to be vented...

you might get the idle issue fixed with your tune when you get it but for now (if it works) at least your car wont be dieing all the time...mines been idling fine and has a nasty lope now ever since i vented my crankcase....my afr was unaffected at WOT and normal driving also

Funny you say that because my car was idling fine for a few days, but then I got an engine light, hooked up the PCV tube and the engine light went away but then she died at idle... fix one problem and get another... I'm going to see what happens with my tune, and go from there.
