Ok Ive got a reddish colored fluid running down my h-pipe and I cand figure out where its comming from. So what fluid is red in an MTX car? Break? Clutch slave? It cant be tranny fluid unless someone really f***ed up and put in ATX fluid. Im gonna put her on 4 stands tomarrow and pull the tranny plug just to check. If someone did do that what kinda damage do you think Im looking at? I havent noticed any slippage but I've only had the car for 6 weeks so I may not know what Im looking for. Anyhoo input is appriciated

Umm.....actually the manuals use Dexron, Mercon, or a synthetic ATF. The clutch master/slave is brake fluid, so it should be clear. Most likely just a trans leak.

Interesting. I was looking through the Chilton and it specificly said NOT to use Dextron or Gear oil. Only to use Mercron or other such lubricants. Whats the differance? I went down to Schucks today and they didnt have either of those things. The guy said to use a heavy oil or something similar. Weird...

Gear oil is WAY too think....Regular old Mercon is good, Synthetic ATF is better. Dextron is just Chevys spec for the same fluid. Most generic ATF will meet both specs, Mercon and Dextron. Go with Amsoil synthetic if you can afford it. But point being, if its red, it IS likely from the trans...probably just a leak at one of the seals, input or output, or maybe at the speedo or neutral safety switch. Just take a look for the highest point that is wet, and the furthest forward. Hopefully you can pinpoint it that way.

Hey man,

Sounds like you should check the fluid level before you drive it too much more.. How bad is the leak? Do you see a puddle when you park?
I am heading out of town for the weekend, going down to Vancouver WA where they know how to celebrate Independence Day, but when I get back next week we can check it out..

Let me know,

Steve

Unless this is on another car besides his mustang I'm pretty sure it's not from a clutch master or slave leak....

the red stuff is tranny fluid. IT's actually better to be using that in our T-5 trannys than gear oil.

I checked/changed the fluid today and it wasent very low at all, just a slow leak that looks like its comming from the speedo cable, nothing to worry about for now. I took the car in to have the tranny flushed today and the guy said my water pump is sucking air...when it rains it pours I guess. hehe Cars are too expensive, Im getting a Segway

::EDIT:: Hey steve I think Im gonna brave the water pump and head down to Kelso/Longview on sat and stay through mon if you wanna hook up. Nickel's stang is down in Kelso to so we might want to go and play for a bit. If your up to it let me know I'll PM my cell
