guys, tell me what you know about coil over kits!

because of my body kit i didnt want to drop my car too low. the main part im worried about is the steeda front. i am concerned about scraping driveways and getting on alignment racks, lifts, and getting towed.

so i am thinking about getting a whole from coil over kit. i was going to do just a PA k member even before i was thinking of going coil over, just for weight loss.

on another forum i heard the range with the qa1 kit was 3 1/2 lower then stock to 1 in. higher then stock. this would help some of my concerns. i will also lose more weight.

however i was wondering what do people do for shocks and struts on coil over setups? you would have to go aftermarket because of the drop i guess which will make the coil over conversion pretty expensive.

what shock and struts would you guys suggest?

also what springs do coil over guys use in the rear? i would only need 2 that drop the car about an 1 1/4. i assume that is what im going to try to get away with for the front. do i just buy a whole set of springs and only use 2?

are there any cons to coil over set up?

first off i started with tokico illuminas and steeda sport springs all the way around, summit upper and lower control arms, front and rear sway bars, strut tower brace,and full length weldin subframes, then i put on a qa1 k-mem when i did my long tubes, the stock a-arms rub the k mem even after i had the stock a-arms grinded down so from my experience if u do a k-member do a-arms 2!, so then i ordered qa-1 a-arms, and while i was at it i ordered a front coilover kit from competitive engineering. the coilover kit came with new springs to go on the tokicos i already have up front, and i sold the front steeda sport springs, so now i have the coilovers up front and steeda sport springs in the back, all in all it cost me like a grand for the coilover kit,the qa-1 a-arms and k-member, and now my suspension is done, finally!! and i absolutely love it, she corners and handles awesome!!!!!!!! plus i dropped aroundover 75lbs with the new parts

If you can afford them go ahead, It's in my plan book.

You'll need some strong C/C plates becuase all the front weight will reside on the strut towers.

You'll also be able to run a higher spring rate in the rear than you would on the stock setup.

I won't NOT reccommend any K member for you except the stocker, especially since you live in NJ, if you get into an accident you insurance company might drop you for not having on-par safty equipt.

Coil over is a substantial and expensive mod...

K Member is also a very substantial and expensive mod. It will make your car lighter but far less safe in the event of a front end collision.

Dude, are you sure? I'm just asking cause these are serious race parts...

Maybe you should do some simpler suspension mods first and see if that gets you to where you need to be?

well im not sure, but i was thinking about it. thanks for your replies btw.

i didnt know the k member is so unsafe. im not even sure if my insurance company would know what the heck they were looking at in the event of an accident. id prolly wanna kill myself anyway.

this is not my daily driver so i was considering it, but you guys got me a bit worried.

well i dont really like all the weight of the car on the strut tower. i didnt know that was the case with coil overs. damn, i thought i had my lowering worries fixed. i guess it back to taking chances with a set ofsprings.

i just dont want to rip off the front of the car, just to get a tow if i need one.

still wanting to do a k member though.

Yes, alot of FWD cars have to use coil-over setups due to limited space in the front

my coiovers suck, want to get rid of them, but need to save for H&R sportlines w/tuned Bilsteins all around......

BTW I have Central Coast Mustang coilovers with SuspensionTech struts/shocks. Their instructions for product installation were non-existant, quality is crappy, and I have to modify SO MUCH STUFF just for the kit to fit.....now it is all noisy and I WANT TO GET RID OF IT!

I went with UPR Coil overs and KYB 4 way adj.struts .Best mod I've made.Also went with UPR K member and A arms.

wow, one hates and is getting rid of it, and one says its the best mod he made.

it could have been the brand you went with. in need some more info guys. tell me about you kits. fomoco, what is the range you can drop your car?

also did you have to fabricate alot things to make it fit?

everyone how does the coilovers put all the wait on the strut towers? why are springs different as far as this goes?

in a nutshell, your strut goes thru the C/C plate, which is connected to the strut tower.

i think it depends on what kit you get. a lot of the cheaper kits are a low quality. some of the not as expensive kits (MMR) are a very good quality. ive had experience with a lot of different kits and the MMR ones are about the best of the reasonably priced kits. im still deciding of i will use them or Maximum Motorsports Bilstein/Hypercoil Coilovers.

probably gonna end up getting the Maximum Grip package from Maximum Motorsports. it has frotn a rear Bilstein coilovers with Hypercoil springs, C/C plates, subframes, tubular LCA's Panhard bar, Torque Arm, K-Member, Bumpsteer Kit, Front Control Arms, plus a few other things. for brakes i want to run Cobra R fronts with cobra rears. if you get the idea, im just a little into turning corners.
