Hi all, I have another question :D Is it possible to get in 400hp range with a good h/c/i setup and tune? I have the article which shows 400hp on a carbed 5 liter, and wanted to make sure I can do that with this engine... If so what is a good setup (planned on afr heads and custom cam)...

Yes, it is very doable indeed. I would go with afr 185 heads, a custom cam, and probably a very good flowing intake. Maybe a victor or a performer rpm2. Make sure you mention to the cam maker that 400hp is your goal. At the crank, 400 isn't too hard to get and 350 is easy with out of the box parts on a stock block. Just gotta have some planning and a higher compression than stock.

K thx for the replies.. I am trying to figure out the best way to acheive the most hp in the 400's without breaking the stock block ( mine is pretty much new). Would it make more sense and be more streetable if I aim for 300's in hp and then supercharge? I plan on using the car almost 100% on the street..
Its a hard decison for me, im starting to get some extra $$$ in and I need to decide whether to go n/a, supercharge, or turbo and stay within the limits of the block. :bang:

2 things to get 400 RWHP out of a 302.

1) Spin it to 7000-7200.
2) Change the pistons.

With about 10.5:1 - 11:1 compression, and a piston that will accept a 2.02 valved head, you could probably do it fairly easily. I'd bet that you could do it in such a way that it would still be fairly street-able, too.

... which is why I said "no" in my response. Just an H/C/I on an otherwise stock 302 won't do it, because the stock block isn't up to the RPM required. Now, if you're going to build it from scratch, that be a different story ... (and I would stroke it then anyway, why the heck not)

do this and run 4.30s cause you will need them.

talk to jay allen to grind you a cam, or rick anderson.

you will want a holley systemax intake or an rpm2

we are talking RWHP here... you shoudl be able to hit 370+ at least.

stock block not spinning high, the answer is NO

it just wont happen due to the laws of physics.

you could take every bit of parasitic drag off the car, power steering a/c / run an electrical water pump and you would fall short

I think what he meant by "stock block" was the stock internals too. The internals, mainly the pistons, wouldn't allow you use a large enough cylinder head to cut back on the RPM necessary. With a 1.90 valved head, you'd probably need to spin the motor to 8000 to get 400 RWHP out of it. At these types of RPM levels, you are taking a chance of a rod exiting stage left...

I'm just going to go back to the original post, and take it worst case. Can you put together a H/C/I setup that will make 400 horsepower. Let's say crank horsepower, since that's a far easier target. I just don't think it's really a target that's practical, given the stated conditions. At best, 400 bhp is 340 rwhp, which I have yet to see anyone do (at least on here) with just H/C/I. Considering that most people think 300+ is a respectable target, I'm a bit surprised to see so many people in this thread who think 400 bhp is possible with H/C/I.

Or maybe I'm just dumb. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

there are people on here with 325 with h/c/i and people with stock cam and heads hiting 272 so why is 340 at the the rear wheels not possible I could see the happening
There's what, one person on here with 325? Two? These people with 320+ are the statistical outliers, on the top end of the spectrum. The vast majority of us with good H/C/I setups are right near 300 plus or minus. Sure 340 is possible, but I think it is very unlikely.

But why focus on dyno numbers anyway. There is much, much more to performance (street or track) than peak horsepower or peak torque.

you know what Ill just have to hit 340 cause I know it wont take two much more just a good combo built to the max and she will still be streetable
I wouldn't try it on the stock shortblock. You'll be sorely dissapointed. If you can get it to run right, you'll have to knock the limiter out of it. If you knock the limiter out of it, you'll have to keep the revs above 2000 all the time. If you still run about 2000 RPM no problem, you'll be shifting at 7000. A stock rotating assembly doesn't like it. Rods like to detach from the crankshaft and exit stage right. I've seen it.

Good luck in your adventure, though.
