H C I Crane 2031 Cam & X303 heads Idle issues

Hi All,

have been a lurker for a while trying to pick up info for my next challenge. I have a 95 GT with the auto in it, that I just couldnt leave stock.

I picked up a set of Ford motorsport X303 heads, a Cobra intake, Crane Cobra 1.7's, Cobra 24lb Injectors and a tuned MAF, Mac shorties, 70mm throttle body, and a Crane 3021 Cam. I have timing set @ 14deg

The Car seems to have a ton of power, and idles very nice for a while (slight lope) then will out of nowhere begin to hunt for the Idle and then die. Then my pony will fire right back up and idle fine for another 5-10 minutes

The Bottem end and car have about 75k, and I have put about 100 miles on the car since the HCI.

I manage heavy equipment for a large construction company so my time is very limited, mostly to sundays. I would love to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks all! RIP

might have a leak somewhere, i just did a HCI install and I have a coolent leak at the back of the lower manifold, before that i had blown a small hole in one of the gaskets. tearing it down again this weekend.

If everything seems in order, no vac leaks or such I would try the full idle re-set...It may help....
With that set-up you may always have some "livable" idle issues....As it gets more towards the Winter it will hunt even more...

I tried this and it solved 95% of my idle issues....give it a shot.

Could be you need a tune. When you start your car up, go wide open throttle, or accelerate quickly your car is running in open loop. It's also in open loop when you start your car.

After your car warms up, or when you are cruising part throttle, it runs in closed loop mode. Seems to me like your car is fine in open loop but the tune is off when you get to closed loop operation.

If you start your car up and let it idle, you can stand outside the car and actually hear when the computer goes from open to closed loop.

You need a tune.. The load from teh auto exacerbates this...

yea pry need a tune, also it just happens to be a normal problem among those with these types of mods. Sometimes it will be fine for a week or more, and other times ill strat it and the rpms shoot to 2k then slowly drop to 1k where it usually idles. Sometimes it will want to die, and ill put it in gear and it will die. then i start it back up and its all good.

Doesn't it go into closed loop after roughly 60 seconds.

Maybe it is different with the sn-95's...

Closed loop is when it reaches operating temp. It than redirects the air from the smog pump to the cats 100% and starts reading the O2 sensors and makes adjustments.

SN95 very sensitive to vacume at idle. Short LSA in a cam, wierd idle and stalling issues. Time for a chip or tune.

Ok, I will triple check for vacuum leaks.....

In the mean time which chip should I lean towards to make this baby run. I am very short of time so plug and play would be very convienent.

When you say ... Plug & Play ............

If you might be thinking you can do an off the shelf chip ......
I don't think thats gonna happen

Don't know where you are located so I would get that info out
because you are gonna need a good, reputable place that can
burn you a chip.

By letting the forum know your location ... perhaps some member
local to you can recommend a tuner

What ever you do ... get some good references from the place
you choose to do the tuning :Word:

I would say you could contact Don at LaSota Racing

I would tell you he would be the one guy I'd trust
to get a chip setup for your issues
AND
He has the experience to do it by mail

My bad,

I am in Portland Oregon. Give me a bit more info on that speed shop you were talking about. I have checked around in this area and I cant find a good dyno tuner in the area. Mabey someone else knows of one? RIP

No need to be concerned about the omission of location

After I did my h/c/i install I had a similar condition. The motor would idle fine sometimes and other times it would hunt and surge like crazy. My first attempt at "fixing" it involved adjusting the screw under the little rubber cover on the throttle body and shooting for max. manifold vacuum. This seemed to help slightly, but the idle was still erratic. I finally got a chip and with the idle speed raised to 900RPM the problem completely disappeared. My cam is pretty mild. The LSA is 114 deg. and duration is 216 deg. @ .050". The lift is around .512" with 1.72 rockers. My computer is out of a '95 Cobra and I used a JMS chip to complete the tune.
