Had to put my dog to sleep :(

I know there are a bunch of dog lovers in here, and a few that knew my Dobey Buddy, so I thought I'd share. Had 'em for 8 years since he was a puppy, and even up until yesterday he acted like one.

He'd developed what they call "Wobbles", as quoted quickly in this online search:

Dogs with Wobbles are simply born with the condition. Running too much or too hard, roughhousing, or swimming do not cause Wobbles. The dog’s spinal column is malformed so that it compresses the spinal cord.

So basically, his neck was stiff and he wouldn't lift it for the time being, his shoulders seemed to be pinched in that he'd yelp out loudly when trying to sit up or often when trying to lay down. Sometimes just laying there he'd yelp out. And to the degree where you'd think someone was beating him

Got quotes on hospitalization, surgery, etc., and even with everything we could do the doctor was just not optimistic about its success. A quick online search tells me that with everything done, a success rate of 55% is the number I had to look at. Not good. The doc even said that with whatever I chose to do, she would expect it to come back and that it was only a matter of time. To see poor Buddy in such pain again and possibly become paralyzed, I couldn't do it. I've had hyper dogs but he was borderline nuts as far as energy went - I know he would've hated to not be able to run around the yard at 100mph all day long.

So that's that. Had to share with some friends. :SNSign: I was a total wreck this morning

Sorry for your loss man...i am one of those people that has a greater love for animals then humans.....when people die it doesnt strike me as much as when a dog does

man that sucks i wish i could get my dog fuzzball back (was a full blooded chow)... but my cat last week get a total block and couldnt pee... and he had so much toxans built up over night by the time we got to the vet the doctor said there might be a chance he wouldnt make but they gave him fluids and flushed him out and we ok... but didnt look great for a week... and cost 340 dollars... but its worth it...

My family recently had two older (10-12 years) dogs that we had to put down for various reasons a year or so ago. That was rough, both at the same time, and we'd gotten another since then who's also given us a new little puppy. And I've been through it before, it always sucks. It's never been this rough though.

As far as another Doberman goes, I don't know when. I can't replace Buddy. I've replaced other dogs before, in some capacity anyway, but Buddy was definitely in a league of his own with me.

We still have a German Shephard though, but he's too independent to become like Buddy was with me.

Yea, definitely worth it. I'm a cheapskate but the quote I got for a hospital stay and all the like that came with was just shy of a couple grand, and it didn't even phase me. I mean, what am I going to do with $2K that's more important than keeping my Buddy around? Not much if anything, so that was an easy choice. If only the surgery/procedures would have been WORTH doing (in that success rates were more favorable and/or TREATABLE and not just subdued for who-knows-how-long), I would've had him on his way to Boston already

Awe man that really sucks and I know what your fealing. I had a German Shephard littarly grow up with me I was 12 and he died when I was 19 it hurt a lot. He was the dog that trained the noobs how to stay in the fenece and who was in charge. I can never replace him nor would I try. Sorry for your loss and hopefully you can find another great dog.

I know how hard it is, we had to put our 15 year old boxer down a few weeks ago. That was hard, I've had her since 2nd grade. Now its looking like we have to put our 14 year old boxer down too.

Thanks Derek. At least we've got that - the little yappy-asses will still run amok The Chihuahua was sad last night, he kept going into Buddy's room and keeping him company. He knew something was up

i feel you dude...we had to put our mini schnauzer Katy to sleep last year ...it was pretty terrible cause she was only 4, and she had lymphoma...we did get another mini schnauzer puppy right before we had to put her to sleep though which definately helped because we still had a lil creature to keep us occupied

sorry for your loss man, a dog is truley a mans best freind. i wouldnt know what to do if my pup was to die or something happen to him, he does almost everything with me, he'll even lay under the car when im under it wrenchin on it

Sry to hear that... Im still on my first dog, who's 10th b-day is thursday (18) and mine is the following thurs (25), so we're pretty close, i hope to never be in that position. you gunna (try to) replace him?

uneverkno: he was the same way. I was just out polishing some stuff the other day, and even in pain and unable to lift his head he brought me his toy and hit me on the leg with it so I would play. I threw it a couple feet and he was able to get up to a trot to go get it and bring it back. No pain, which was nice. Then the next day it was worse, then that night was worse yet.

stprorolla49: we had a giant schnauzer when I was a kid, we had to put her down too. I was too young to remember what it was, but I remember the dog.

fox racer: not going to replace him anytime soon. we have other dogs that'll keep us all up in spirits. but you never know who's coming down the Pike.

That sucks bro. My kids keep bugging me for a dog and this is the kind of thing that make sme apprehensive about it. I remember what it was like to loose a pet when I was a kid and was probably never nearly as compassionate as my girls are. Just not sure I want to see my kids have to go through all of that. Sorry about your loosing your dog man.

Thats horrible man, losing a dog is tough. My sister and bro-inlaw bought pure-blood German Shepard (something*hausen-3) and it got hit by a car couple weeks ago and died. It weas only 7 months old too. He would protect my 1.5 year old niece like an older brother. If she started to walk near the road he would run up in front of her and block her so she couldnt get by him. I have never seen a dog so protective like that. Again sorry for the loss dave. i know how you feel.
