Dave, I'm terribly sorry to hear this. I know how hard this decision was for you, and think you did the best you could.

I've heard people say that pets only live a short time so we can experience the love of many during our lives.

Again, very sorry to hear, you have my best wishes.

sorry for your loss these little guys depend on us for everything, drive us crazy,make messes,bark all night,they look at you with that stupid look when there in trouble.they love us and we love them. i have three dogs at the present time and had to put our 14 year old chow to sleep 2 years ago it was not easy. they stand beside you when you need them and you stood beside him when he needed you i respect the fact that you did the right thing very respectable and unselfish now he is out of pain but your in pain. take it easy man just a few thoughts off the top of my head...

sorry to hear about Buddy. Its hard to let a dog so close to you be in pain. I also just had to put my Black Lab "Skeeter" to sleep about a month ago, He has had hip displasia since birth and always had a hard time getting around. And recently the doctors found tumors around his heart. He was in alot of pain and the only descent thing to do was to put him to sleep. we had him for 13 years, was the best dog i ever had.

i have not cried much in my life, but i will cry like a little girl the day anything happens to any of my babies.......i feel for ya man, Dobies especially have such a distinc personality.....mine is not even 2 yet, and i cannot imagine life without him, he sleeps in our bed with my wife and i......

I've had many Dobermans so far in my life, and they really are special characters! Buddy was really somethin', too, I even nicknamed him "Nutty Buddy" because he was so animated.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My sis has a red doberman that looks just like yours, and he's the most loveable, affectionate big ol' lug on four feet you could imagine. He's a gagger with farts in the house, but otherwise, I miss living with that clumsy pooch - I'll be seeing him for the first time in two years this coming weekend. Dogs are so much like family ... so much more personality to 'em than cats, IMHO.

I agree, but I never owned a cat. I've seen some that surprised me with their degree of affection though, so I can totally relate to their owners too.

Of all the dogs we've had, and that's easily dozens throughout my life so far, Buddy was definitely the closest to me.

Hey, man. Just saw this thread. I am sorry for your loss. I grew up on a farm that was practically a petting zoo. I know what it's like to lose some good pets that are considered family members. Hang in there.

i have never owned a doberman before my current one, but i am wondering if these are traits characteristic of the breed? loyal as hell, overflowing with energy, goofy, affectionate, extremely protective, deceptively smart.....mine just does some things sometimes that make you scratch your head, like run full bore into the fence when chasing a toy.....but yet he displays a rather keen intelligence, and seems to know when one of his masters has had a rough day and will shower you with affection..... sometimes i wonder if he is special, or if they are all similar...of course he is special to me, but everyone thinks that there own kid is special my other 2 babies are a pitbull/bull mastiff mix, and a miniature dachshund ( she thinks she is bigger than the other 2 combined!)

Yup, it is. Buddy was beyond goofy. He'd get excited and jump around in circles if he didn't run around at full speed. He'd jump straight up in the air and seem to float to catch his toys, he'd also jump up and snap at snowballs if you tossed one towards him. He'd woof in his sleep, pick up his water dish and tap me with it if he was thirsty and finished all his water. He'd try to sneak up on my bed while I'm on it (hilarious). Once he had his 2 front paws and one hind leg up, I moved and noticed (surprisingly enough he had gotten this far without me noticing!) and he froze and kept his head down trying to hide from me If I were laying down and had my feet hanging off the bed or something, he'd rock his body into them to play. He always liked taking water bottles from me and would sit there endlessly just making it make noise like a loud crunchy squeeky toy. We even taught him to go get the remote once, but he just sat down with it and held it in his mouth. And on and on with the antics.

He'd bump himself on a few things now and then but he wasn't overly clumsy. Dobermans usually are a bit clumsy though. As far as how goofy he was, I would've suspected him to be way more clumsy.

Sorry to hear man. That sucks.

We had a dachsund when I was younger that was the best dog we ever owned. Well you know how small those little things are...he was under a blanket in the living room and no one knew (he usually liked to hide under blankets and towels) Well to make a long story short my brother got off the couch and stepped on him, not knowing he was there of course. It crushed his little spine.

We had to put him down. I never saw my dad cry before that day. Dogs loyalty to there owners is just simply amazing and most the time they are more loyal the humans.

That horrible I'd like to get a little weiner dog the same color as Buddy was. I always did.

I forgot to mention earlier, but our Chihuahua thinks he's bigger than the Doberman and shepard combined

My mom breeds them. She told me the other day that she found a new stud with papers that she will be breeding her papered female with this month. If your interested let me know. The puppies that this female has had in the past have been amazing.

Also, i wanted to say sorry to hear about your dog. I've had 4 pets. 1 cat, a little white fluff ball (don't remember very well) ran out side in the street while it was snowing and got hit by a truck, and then most recently i had two German Wired hair pointers that i had to give up when i enlisted.

My family had a doberman when I was younger, don't really remeber it. I want to get another one, but it won't be any time soon.

We also had a regular sized dachshund since I was 11, but he got hit by a car about 1.5 years ago (b-day was yesterday). A few months before that we got a miniature dachshund. The little one is always sleeping under blankets and wanting to play ball.

There are more pictures on my computer of the dogs, then there are of anything.
