hand held tune or dyno tune??

hey guy i'm intersted in getting my stang tuned, and was thinking about getting a handheld tuner from mustangtuning, which would include gears tuner and other stuff.. a couple of my buddies told me that i should just get a dyno tune b/c it would better and more accurate.. any help would be great thanks again..

its a 2001 GT 5 speed..

the hand held stuff will get you close providing you know what you are doing. then after you are close you can get a dyno tune. Atleast that is what i have been told to do.

the hand held tuner is a good starting point for a tune but its better to get a dyno tune morer accurate and the A/F mixture would be dead on

thanks again for the help guys.. i'm going to get the kit since it comes with gears and i won't have to worry about the speedo, then i'll get a tuned on the dyno down the road.. thanks for all the help..

you shouldnt need a dyno tune from changing gears. If you mod the engine with bolt on's or power adder's then yeah a dyno is needed.

Dyno tune > handheld programmers

Of course you can combine the two. You could go pay for a few dyno runs and use your handheld programmer to tune it, but I'd rather let a pro do it.

If you are just changing gears, you could just get a Speedcal. What other mods do you have or have planned?

i have a dropped in k&n air filter, SLP catted X pipe, magnaflow mufflers which i'm going to get the SLP LM I next month..

you could go with the SCT XCALII and have best of both worlds....hand held tuner/data logger/dyno tuneable!...best money i've ever spent on my stang, with the xcalII and the dyno tune to go along with it my buddy netted 60HP extra...with my home tune i added 20HP to mine and i don't even know what i'm doing!!! about to go get a dyno tune put in. (ALSO IT HOLDS 3 custom tunes along with the factory tune). i can get you in touch with the guy that sold me mine and he is an SCT certified programmer/tuner.

Both. Buy a flasher/tuner and tweek it on the dyno. That way you know its safe and not too lean. You still can recalibrate for gear changes , off road exhaust and so on. :SNSign:

I like having a handheld for being able to make lots of adjustments, I would need like a 4 position custom dyno to match all the stuff I can do. And on a basicaly stock bolton car a dyno is not worth the extra cost(besides to check A/F, which I highly reccomend).

. None of that will happen on a nearly stock GT. not much more than 10 peak...on any 99-04 GT. And I have barely added 60 RWHP from cams and full boltons, AND a dyno tune by the best out there. MPH. Must have been an 03 cobra....dont get this guys hopes up lol. GTs dont respond to well to simple mods...but a tune definatly helps with drivability and it "feels" alot stronger in low-mid range.

You can have a tuner do a custom tune on the dyno and then load it on to the predator.

A good dyno tune will be MAF based. The fuel changes made via a handheld are not but like others have said, a dyno tune can be loaded into the handheld. That is the major difference between the two. Having the MAF dialed in is always better, and will require fewer adjustments as your modifacations grow.
