My wife got me a Roush pre-painted (black) hood scoop for my birthday. Maybe somebody can answer a question I have before installing. The instructions call for drilling (7) 5 mm holes. I have no problem doing this, but I want to use a 5 mm, 135 deg. split point bit so it will not "walk" when I start drilling.
So far, I have not been able to find a place to purchase this drill bit. Anybody know where I might buy one? I'm not in a rush, my birthday isn't until Dec. 2, so I've got time to find one.

7/32 = 5.5 mm, according to my conversion chart. Just get an smaller standard split point bit to drill the pilot hole and then finish it off with a 5mm bit.

Oh and +1 for the wife gift.

Bit

I found the bit I need at Grainger, but I can't buy it because they're only business to business.

It is installed with 3 strips of double sided tape and 7 studs. Yes, he will be surprised.

Have you ever seen a center punch that's spring loaded and fires the tip down when pressed? You just press it where you want and it will snap down and leave tiny dimple without denting the surrounding area.

Yea, it's called an automatic center punch - I have a couple. I will definitely use one, but I want the split point bit too. Thanks.

Found the 5 mm, 135 deg. split point bit I was after. I ordered it from McMaster Carr, $2.50 plus shipping. All I should need now is for Dec. 2 to get here.

They didn't say, just that applicable shipping would be added.

Shipping turned out to be $4.71. It sucks, but I expected as much with such a small order. At least it's on the way.

Do they make one thats double sided tape only? Are you guys drilling these holes with the hood still on the car?

I would rather drill the hood. I recently read a guy installed a hood scoop with only the double sided tape. About a week later, it flew off while driving. No thanks, I'll drill baby drill.

Ha it flew off?? My scoop is held on by tape only and has yet to fly off, even at 140mph...maybe he didn't prep his hood prior to putting it on?

3m tape should hold it. I know of people who took off the bolts so drilling would be needed. Properly preppred, tape alone should be fine. Many parts of cars from the factory are attached that way.
