The problem occurs at different times. Frequently, at a traffic light, if I shift to neutral and release the clutch while I wait, It can be very hard to shift to first gear when the light changes. While up-shifting through the gears, the effort required varies and can make shifting a real pain in the butt. The gears never grind but I never know how much force will be required to make a shift. Then somtimes it shifts smooth and effortlessly. Does anyone know what causes this to happen?

I chnged out my tranny fluid for the 1st time (85000 miles) and it made a world of difference in my 98 GT. Used MERCON V by Castrol. Mine was hard to shift, best $11.00 I ever spent on it!

Agreed. Try changing the fluid first. Sometimes shifting in to 2nd really quickly before going to 1st helps as well.. of course, that's more of a band-aid type fix.

I have heard that regular tranny fluid can cause this problem in cold weather. You may want to switch to synthetic. Maybe Royal Purple?

Good luck.

Guess its time for me to change my fluid as well. Is taking the shifter off the easiest way to refill it?

I would say so. That's how I'm gonna be doing it.

Im having the same problems with my t56...when i start it, no problems. But after warm up it can be hard to go into first or second and reverse from a stop, but once i get rolling all is well. syptoms start once i stop and take my foot off the clutch, still shifts well if i dont let off the clutch though. i changed out the trans fluid with royal purple and adjusted the firewall adjuster but no help.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this. It's prob your clutch not fully disengaging due to a stretched cable.

Typically if you are at a light in nuetral and push the clutch in, the internals are still spinning. It takes about 5-10 seconds for them to stop. If you push the clutch in, count to 10, and then try to go into first it should slide in easy. If it doesn't, then it's a good indicator your clutch is still grabbing slightly.

You can try the self adjuster. Grab the pedal and pull up hard. Then push it to the floor hard with your foot. If it clicks, it has adjusted.

You may need a new cable or firewall adjuster if that doesn't fix it.

i was dreading such an answer...although a internal problem would be just as bad. I have gone through 3 clutch cable in 5 years. it was after the after the second went out i installed the quadrant and adjuster (both steeda). i tried loosening the adjuster (causing the clutch to disengage higher up)but it didnt help. i also noticed that when i fully engage the clutch i can hear a click coming from the quadrant. anyway, im gonna get in there tomorrow and move the cable from the second (closest to firewall) to first position on the quadrant and adjust it some more at the firewall. probably wont do much, but right now anythings worth a try.

Here is a simple test:

crank the car, put it in neutral and let the clutch out. Then press the clutch pedal, count to 7, and shift into reverse. Did it grind? If so, the clutch is dragging and not spinning down quick enough. Either you need to pop the pedal up to let it self-adjust, or if you have an aftermarket manual adjuster, you need to tighten it up to where the cable is barely snug with the pedal all the way out. If you have too much slop, the pedal can't disengage the clutch completely and it will be hard to shift.

+100,000.

I just got my car together using all 2001 GT parts. I had the same problem. The clutch was shot. It was hard as can be to switch gears, and to get into a gear at a stop.

My disc was shot, even though it wasn't slipping. I bought a new kit and my car is fine now.

Don't drive it for too long like this, you don't want to have transmission damage.
