Hello ladies and gents.
gonna do the harmonic balancer and have a question that i did not find mention of in all of the threads i searched.

in reading the Haynes manual, it mentions marking the crank pulley and balancer for proper balance (sounds like a dynamic balance at the factory).
it also talks about removing the pins (presumably weights) on the old balancer and attaching them in the same location on the new balancer.

now i have never heard of anyone doing any of that in the threads here. is that some sort of Ford torture if using one of their balancers, or is each assembly balanced and the pins are like the weights added to wheels when dynamically balanced? (i.e., wheels come basically balanced, but when tires are added, etc, fine balancing is needed).

i would appreciate any and all advice. it seems like you guys just bolt the new balancers in and forget about it, with no weight transfer or pulley-to-balancer relationship markings (not that the latter would really matter with a new balancer). im not using a ford balancer BTW.
i dont want to wear out the bottom end more than necessary by omitting something important like having it a bit out of balance.

many thanks for any and all replies!

i have the feeling that i dont need to worry about the weights and all of that; just bolt it in. i will try once more for confirmation.

I have heard of the marking of the pulley and the balancer. Never done it and don't think it has had any adverse effect on the motors that I have rebuilt. I have never heard of transfering weights from one balancer to another. I always just reused the old balancer, unless it was beat to death with a sledge hammer (don't ask). Most balancers are already weighted to a certain balance. Although I have seen some listed in summit and jegs as having zero balance.

Hope this helps in someway.

6cougar8, thanks so much for the info.
i got that info from Haynes (page 2D22, IIRC). for what it is worth, they also say to lightly hammer the new balancer on (something i would not be doing). so......
i do appreciate the reply. i was all ready to go and then read that. being imbalanced and stressing the bottom end more than i need to was something i did not want to do.
thanks again.
