When you see a rubber thing inside of it sticking out. Some guys will tell you not to bother putting a stock one back in. I wouldn't recommend it.

I believe GTJake is selling a romac 50oz balancer for a good price. Might as well put a real balancer on it while your there.

I just put a romac on last week. Got it off of ebay. Car idle's smooth again. The rubber on the old one had almost fallen all the way out by the time I dropped it off at the shop.

Pick yourself up a Pioneer balancer from strokermotor.com Its a nice piece and very good price. I think mine came to $180 shipped to my door which is about $100 cheaper than the romac, and just about as nice. http://strokermotor.com/DESCatalog/page-4-SFI.html you have to call to order one.

Are you supposed to feel any rubber sticking out behind the balancer? I can feel what I think is a ridge of rubber sticking out on the back of my balancer. It feels pretty even, so I'm not sure if I'm checking the right spot.

This should be on topic anyway, if only as advice on removing the harmonic balancer. I don't plan on hijacking this thread.

I've already decided to replace the balancer anyway. Has anyone been able to loosen the one bolt holding the balancer on? I didn't have enough room for my impact wrench to fit, and I don't want to drain my radiator, so I need to buy shorter sockets. The air ratchet didn't have enough torque to budge it. I tried to use a breaker bar, but I can't keep the balancer from rotating. I left the crank pulley and the belt on, but it still slips.

Any suggestions?

Put the car in 5th gear and it will not move. I did mine a few months ago and that's what every one here recomended to do and it worked like a charm. I used a 3/8 ratchet and muscled it out of there it did not turn.

Try sticking your car in 5th gear if its a manual. I did that and an impact and that nut came right off, so maybe it'll come off with a breaker bar that way too

if you are feeling daring, hook a 1/2 inch drive ratchet on the bolt with a breaker bar and have a buddy *bump* the ignition. itll break on loose

5th gear like they said, have someone hold the brakes hard and use a breaker bar or a home made breaker bar ( 4' pipe over my 1/2" drive ratchet ) and it'll loosen easily with no issues.

No good for me on 5th gear, I got an AODE. I tried putting it in Drive, 1 and 2 with no luck. Would putting the tranny in reverse be just as good, or would it put stress on the tranny?

Before I got my air compressor & tools, I tried a breaker bar over a ratchet. That's when it started slipping. I puit a ratchet extension in the power steering pulley, so the belt doesn't move. But the crank pulley slips on the belt.

I'll try the impact wrench before "bumping" the engine over, but it's an option.

Just an idea... If it spins clockwise looking at it from the front, stick the socket on there and a breaker bar, let it breaker bar touch the ground to the right of the pulley then bump it a little to see if that'll break it loose?

I did mine a few weeks ago - remove the flywheel access cover, and put 14mm socket (I think that's the size) on one of the converter bolts, leave them on... while you slowly rotate until the socket hits and stays put, then give it all your muscle to loosen the bolt. It worked for me.
