Has anyone ever rebuilt their P/S Cylinder?

I've been needing to replace a worn boot on the end of my pump and I have also just noticed some minor dripping going on. I see in many of the catalogs that they sell a cylinder seal kit for like $13 where as a new cylinder itself is like $120. I can't help but wonder if A) the seal kit will solve my leak and B) if it is simple enough to justify saving a hundred bucks not to mention the satisfaction of fixing it yourself. Seems I have little to loose, but I don't want to find out when it is too late that I need to also own $300 worth of specialty tools to do it.

Rebuilding the power cylinder is relatively simple and effective provided it is not worn excessively. The instruction tell you how to do it OR simply: RTFM (see the Timeless Wisdoms as always) Be sure to clean and inspect the cylinder BEFORE you reseal it. Yes, I've done it many times.

I'm with SD... I've rebuilt mine twice since '88, and it sealed up well both times. It did eventually start leaking again, but that was a couple years later...

Rebuilding the unit doesn't require any specialty tools as far as I can remember, though it is kinda a hassle to do. Just follow the instructions, work in a clean environment, don't rush, and it should go ok.

I am in the middle of rebuilding mine. Getting the inner seals out are a real pain in the a**. And I am still searching for silicon grease to coat everything in. Be prepared for a lot of fluid.

Rebuilt mine as well, and yes, the inner seals are a PITA to get out, but a nice pick and disregard for the integrity of the old part will suit you fine

The inner seal can sometimes be popped out.
remove the snap ring and outter seal, run the motor and turn the wheels from stop to stop. the pressure will sometimes push the seal out, but have a catch pan under the ram to collect the flow of fluid that will follow.

As I stated before, a crochet hook works well. A LIGHT application of dielectric grease (as used in ignition work) is well suited for the task.

Pak: I was funnin' you. You stated the the boot was on the pump (not the cylinder). See the top right pic in your illustrations. As a veteran poster here, you must realize that we ALL make gaffs and the occasional ribbing does us ALL good.

At least you know that someone actually READ and understood your post.

I figured you was funnin me SD, that is why I ended my reply with the same exact smiley as you. I actually said pump on purpose to refer to the boot at the pumping end of the cylinder, as opposed to the elbow dust boot on the end of the cylinder. Yeah, that's what I meant.

So tell me, what post did I miss where you stated before about the crochet hook? I tried a search first b4 posting and kind of came up empty.

Trust me, the crochet hook reference is here but I can't find it either. It was within the last couple of days and not on this thread. I'm just not willing to spend that much effort to retrieve it. Of course, if you like to me to prove it, it can be done. It just seems so, well, pointless.
I don't knowingly make false assertations. I'mhere to have fun and that seems to be a scare commodity lately.

Credibility or proof was not the question nor would it ever be. I did the search before posing the question originally, as any good poster should do to avoid repetition like with those pesky engine swap threads. When I saw "as stated" but couldn't find the statement itself, I just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed any crucial tips or tricks or that my eyes weren't suddenly going bad on me since it implied the answer was right in front of me. I'm not sure how my question put you in such a testy defensive mood, but I have re-read it and see no hidden sarcasm or accusation what so ever. Just a simple question of what I might have missed. I'm here to have fun too, but it seems as scarce on your side of the fence as the other.

OK, let's let it rest and then die. In retrospect, it seems to be a petty point to divide people "having fun." It is safe to say we both have lots of experience and savvy which can only be of benefit to the board.
