Has anyone run the 1/4 with NO belt?

Just curious if anybody had any experience in making a pass with no belt. I am heading out again this Friday in search of the elusive 12.99 pass......elusive for me anyway.

I am doing a few things to my tune and am going to bring a timing light with me to see how the car responds to different degrees of advance.

I never really believed in UDPs, thus the reason I never installed them. But since I have my e-fan running perfectly, the only thing that not having a belt will do is effect my power steering and my alt, but I figure one or two passes on battery won't hurt anything.

I just want to do this for ****s and grins, just to see if there really is any difference between running my normal belt and not running a belt what so ever. I figure after I get my passes, I will remove the belt for the last two passes, just to see what happens.

Just curious to see if anybody else has done it and what their results were.

E-fan....but good looking out nonetheless.

I'm not really looking to prove a point, per se. By that I mean, I am not looking to validate my opinion. I just figured I don't believe in the UDPs enough to buy and install them, because I don't think they will make that much of a difference. So to really get a more accurate idea, I figure I will drop the belt and see what happens. Who knows, maybe I will prove myself wrong and drop a tenth....I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't cry if it did. Hell, at this point I will piss in my gas tank if it will get me that extra few tenths. I really want this "ebay and other mans trash" combo to get into the 12s before completely rebuilding the motor.

what would be the total cost of installing a e-fan versus a cheap set udp?

your electric fan will do no good for you if your belt is off. no belt = no cirulating water, water that doesnt get to the radiator to dissapate heat.

and why dont u believe in UD pullies, they are a proven HP gain, on anything!

people could argue about CAIS and stuff like that but pullies are a REAL gain, its a simple physics. the gain is small and u may not feel it but its there.

i'd get pulleys rather than running, you can get a cheap set on ebay, which are great. i wouldnt go thru the hassle to take the belt off.

i bought my ebay set for 30$ and they are good.

do you have an electric waterpump ??? if not how will the water circulate and cool the motor??i would not do this unless i had some way of circulating the coolant to cool the motor but after your run you prolly wont believe in running without a waterpump...if you want 12's hook up some Nitrous...

but can you buy a cheap e-fan and all the hook ups for less?

LMAO!! Yea, I never even thought of that. THAT is why I ask questions first.

The whole time I kept thinking, "I have an electric fan, so the only things that no belt will effect are my power steering and my alt." Even when 4G mentioned potential cooling issues, my very first thought was that he was referring to not having the fan spin. The water pump never even occurred to me. I guess I filled my "I'm a dumbass" quota for the day.

I guess I won't be taking off the belt afterall.

It's not that I think that UDPs are a waste, I just have never seen any real proof of what they do for you. I mean sure, it may free up a pony or two, but I don't think that will translate on the track. That is what I was really trying to find out, if UDPs would actually get me across the traps quicker. To me, the small HP increase isn't worth the time, effort, or potential side effects. I mean, sure if a set of UDPs would get me an extra .1, then I would do it in a heart beat. I just would like to see some proof that they work, in a real world sense. That is why I figured I would drop the belt for a pass or two and see if it really did any good. But that is all out the window now because I am not going to risk any overheating issues with no water pump.

get a belt that will run from the crank to the water pump only that will loosen up quite a bit of power not turning power steering and alt.

i duno man i noticed a change with my UDPs not so much of a raw sotp gain but the engine revved up faster and just a good mod to do IMO

I've heard of doing this before. If you run with the engine cold, then by the time you're at the end of the track your engine should not be hot enough to overheat, and if it does you have bigger problems.

Too bad his waterpump is likely reverse rotation...so you can't really just wrap the belt around it, because then it will spin forward.

what are you current times?

What tricks do you currently do? Ice the intake? Remove front sway bar (reduces weight AND helps transfer the weigh to the rear wheels).

There are lots more I can tell you.. but what r u doing now? and how close are you to the 12.99?

It wont hurt anything if you do it once. Just make sure to throw the belt back on immediately after the pass to let your car cool down on the return road.

Agreed. Just don't hot lap it then pull the belt. Make sure the engine is cool before you do it.

That is the key. Lots of guys do it around here and suffer no ill effects. Just push it along in the staging lanes and crank it up when they line you up and you should be good to go. Just don't forget to put the belt back on for the ride home.
