Has anyone run the 1/4 with NO belt?

your electric fan will do no good for you if your belt is off. no belt = no cirulating water, water that doesnt get to the radiator to dissapate heat.

and why dont u believe in UD pullies, they are a proven HP gain, on anything!


U/D pullies were a great gain for me. I did not suffer any negative effects. Usually pullies uncover a weakness in the charging or cooling system for those that encounter prolems.

I did my U/D pullies but used an ASP 1 7/8 overdrive alt pulley to keep the alt speeds close to stock. I also deleted the smog and A/C.

I then upgraded to a 130A alt, not because i had probs, but because i was about to upgrade to an electric fan. I installed the electric fan, a 3-core rad and a new bosch water pump.

With all those mods and the pullies, i have ZERO charging or cooling issues even on 100 degree days.


When i make a pass down the track, i shut the e-fan off. More electrical flow does make the alt slightly harder to spin. It prob robs a HP at the most, but my cooling system is so great that on the highway i turn the fan off anyway. Usually i flip the siwtch and turn it back on in the return road.

After those mods, i noticed a HUGE increase in power
 
I already have a Taurus e-fan, and a 3g alt. I also removed smog, but haven't removed the AC yet. I plan on removing the AC eventually....basically because I never use it, even in South Florida.....plus I am too lazy to start screwing with the electrical to have the fan come on with the AC.

So I would want to go with a UPD for the crank and water pump but go with an ODP for the alt? Would that even be worth it?

a stock or OD pulley for your alt would be great with an UD setup. its very common that people swap out the UD alt pulley. alot of street cars get a low charge with the UD alt pulley.

when i put my set on, my charged low at idle, while driving it was ok but it was LOW at idle. wasnt good for it, i put the stock alt pulley back on. works great, got a better charger and i am still getting the benefit of the UD setup.

the UD alt pulley only is a small fraction of the UD you get.

the water pump steals roughly 11hp at high rpm. with the smaller crank pulley and the bigger WP pulley. the crank is moving less belt per revolution and the WP needs more belt. so it spins alot slower and thats 95% of the UD right there. i dont think the Alt pulley does too much. ive heard people is big cities have problems with cooling with an UD kit, but for me i am fine, i live in a fairly small area and dont have to sit at stoplights for long.

you said you have the 3g alternator? IIRC, the 3g pulley is the same size as the ud kit's pulley. i heard that before but i dont know for sure if its true.
 
yeah a pulley kit comes with a SMALLER crank pulley, BIGGER WP and BIGGER alt pulley.

the crank is the one driving the belt around. so if the crank pulley is smaller, smaller circumference, it will move LESS belt with each revolution.

now with the bigger WP and alt pulleys. the bigger the pulley, bigger circumference, the more belt length its going to take to turn the pulley once. so it will spin slower

that on top of the slower spinning belt due to the smaller crank pulley the whole belt drive system slows down by quite a bit.

slower spinning accesories equates to less HP drag.


and another note, you wont need to buy a new belt, the UD kits are made to where the factory belt or w/e belt is working now will work with the UD kit.
