Having some problems with my 408...need input.

Well my car blew a headgasket about 1.5 months ago which I fixed. I figured this was because I didn't have the car tuned properly. Anyway, I got that fixed, had the car sitting around for a while and then drove the car around a bit again (still not tuned on the dyno...every time I go there, theres a god damn waiting list, and every time my car comes up on the list something is broken on it!)....

Anyway, after it was sitting around for a while I took it for a drive (about 15km) and the car just STALLED on me while chasing down an rx-8 in 3rd gear...didn't make any bad noises or anything. The engine just all of a sudden felt like it lost alot of power and then it stalled. The engine didn't make any bangs, clunks, knocks or anything, just QUIT and it wouldn't start back up. It has good spark, fuel pressure, injectors are pulsing, air is getting to the engine, but I can't figure out why it won't fire AT ALL.

I was fiddling around with it today trying to figure out what the hell the problem was. I did a compression test on it and I found a strange issue that I HOPE is a blown head gasket. I have *0* compression in cylinder #1 but every other cylinder has 165 psi +/- 3 psi. Even so, my engine SHOULD fire and run on 7 cylinders because I've had to do it before.

I'll be taking the engine apart tomorrow night to find out if I blew a gasket or what the hell is causing the loss of compression, but I can't figure out why the engine won't fire.

Oh...on another note, I found out today I had my BAP sensor hooked up improperly. I had it hooked up to vacuum when it should be open to atmosphere. Could this cause my A/F to be out enough to blow head gaskets? I have a wideband and my A/F was always around the low 12's when at WOT.

Either there is a big hole in the piston, or the valves aren't sealing...

Possibly a HG is blown, but that doesn't sound likely


If you run compressed air into the cylinder in question (a leakdown test), you should be able to tell if the air is going into the intake, exhaust, crankcase, etc.

I think a leakdown test would help you now...

You really think I could have blown a hole in a forged piston with 400ish hp n/a??? I'm not even running much timing on the motor yet...only 10 degrees base, and according to my wideband I'm running reasonably rich. I'm thinking it's either a completely buggered ring (some how) or a headgasket.

I'll probably just take the passenger side head off tomorrrow, because either way, it's gonna have to come off to fix what ever the hell the problem is.

My n/a 2.3 destroyed itself one crisp morning... I can't explain it...

I don't think the 2.3 is even rated at 100hp ???

If you just pull the head, then it could still be difficult to tell what the problem is.
Sometimes a blown HG can be hard to see. It might be hard to see a busted ring as well.
That is why it would be nice to do all the diagnostic stuff before pulling things apart...

I also agree with a leakdown test. Its way easier than pulling a head off. I would also suspect a skipped tooth on the timing chain or something timing related. Especially if everything else seems in order. How did you install the cam? Dot to Dot. If so pull the front cover and take a look...a skipped tooth will be fairly obvious. What exactly was the engine doing right before it went down? RPM, Load, gear?
 
It was probly around 4k at WOT throttle in 2nd gear when it **** the bed. Besides the lack of compression in cylinder #1, the engine SHOULD start I would think. It should be able to run on 7 cylinders easily...I've done it before. You could be right about the timing chain slipping some how maybe...but it was all brand new high quality stuff I put in and the engine has about 350km on it now.
