Head Gasket Install

1. I was just wondering if you install the head gaskets dry or with rtv since I am going to be doing it in about a half hour or so?. Im just putting the water pump back on now.

2. Also do the water pump bolts need a thread sealer or anything like that?

3. Also the stud bolt that goes into the water pump goes in which hole?

4. Also what do you put on the cylinder head bolts, antisieze, lock tite or thread sealer?

Ok I think that is it...more questions than I thought I would have been posting in here.

Thanks,

-Dan

1) Ya I always installed the gasket dry. You could if anything take your finger and put a little motor oil on it but I dont think you need to do that.

2) water pump bolts I believe you dont need to use anything on the bolts but of course around the pump its a good idea to use Black RTV if im not mistaken.

3) not sure off the top of my head.

4) I never use loc tight or rtv sealer on Head bolts! ever! its not fun when you have to remove them due to another blown head gasket or what not. what I do is pickup ARP Head bolts (hopefully thats what your using) dip the threads in motor oil! yes Motor oil! for a little bit of lubrication and it will help you torque them down. Also be sure to torque them down!

You have to use some sort of sealant on the head bolts that pass into water jackets. I used blue Loctite on my studs. You have to use quite a bit of it though, so that you can guarantee there's enough to seal the threads.

I acually did have a leak at a water pump bolt once. Ever since I have put a thread sealer/dab of RTV on the threads.

I used a dab of RTV on the lower head bolts since they go into a water passage. Thread sealer would be better as you will get less drag and a better trq. on those bolts.

ok thanks a lot guys...I finished the waterpump and all that stuff and have the heads mounted but not torqued down...Ill do that on friday...ID didnt get a lot done since I had to try and fix my brothers beater that I am using now since the driver side door wont open.
