You can get to the release button from underneath without removing the dash, but it will be WAY easier if you remove it. Sometimes it can be really tricky to get the stem to release, other times it pops right out. Make sure you note the orientation of the switch and the bezel. THere is a small tab to center both. I think they are finally repoping the retaining screw, but be care putting it back in since it's plastic. Make sure you have he new switch square and the retainer starts smoothly. You can use a #1 phillips to get the retainer out once the stem comes out.
