Head light switch

How do you remove it. My head lights are not working after getting the car back on the road just figured out they where not working last night figured I would start at the switch. I did put a new turn signal switch and harness in and they are working fine.

take out your instrument cluster

to remove the control knob you have to find the release button on the housing. put the switch into the on position and then push the release button and pull the knob out

then unscrew the mounting nut and remove the switch.


The release button is on the side opposite of the wires, and it is pretty close the front of the switch (towards the driver)

You can get to the release button from underneath without removing the dash, but it will be WAY easier if you remove it. Sometimes it can be really tricky to get the stem to release, other times it pops right out. Make sure you note the orientation of the switch and the bezel. THere is a small tab to center both. I think they are finally repoping the retaining screw, but be care putting it back in since it's plastic. Make sure you have he new switch square and the retainer starts smoothly. You can use a #1 phillips to get the retainer out once the stem comes out.

This is good timing. I was thinking about making a few videos or tech write-ups with pics, of some of the things I run across while tearing down my 66. The headlight switch is just one of the videos I was working on. This is not the finished product, but it may help you. I know the video would be better if it were shot in the car, but I don't have a tripod. I think the easiest way to get to the switch is to remove the instrument cluster as has been mentioned.

As for videos, what do you guys think? Is it a waste of time considering half the fun is figuring the stuff out?
