Head question

Hey, my buddy is building a 450-500ish hp supercharged 306 for his 95 GT and wants to know what are the best heads for the job? He has a set of older (68) 302 heads that are nicely ported, bowl ported, 2.02, 1.60 exhaust valves in them and wants to know if he had a little more work done on them if they could sustain the hp? He's already pretty much tapped out with money, doesn't really want to invest in a set of aluminum heads. Were getting ready to slap the engine back together and he wants to know before we do it.

yea, he's trying to decide if he just wants to cut his loses and stick the heads he already has on the engine or just save up some more and buy some aluminum heads. But would the heads he already has sustain that hp level? Or does he just need to save up?

sustain hp level? He can use the heads and swap them when he gets new ones!
He will also notice a huge gain of HP with the rite/better AFR/TW heads.

If he is running a supercharger, he may get by with the heads he has now, but I would advise using very good head gaskets and arp head studs. Also he needs to pay very close attention to his afr. Would be best to either get a tune, or buy a wideband to monitor with. Stock type heads are pretty easy to lift depending on the amount of boost. With factory head bolts I am lifting with only 8lbs on a powerdyne. I have studs, but I gotta pull the heads to chase the threads in the block, so I am just gonna replace the stock heads with some tfs tw's while I have it apart.

Edit: Not lifting anymore, I just blew one or both head gaskets. Now its time to buy the new heads and get it over with.

He'll need to have them tested on a flowbench. They'll need to flow anywhere from 200cfm to 245cfm to support 400-500whp. 200cfm minimum for 400hp and 245cfm minimum for 500hp.

What kind of intake is he running ?

Edelbrock rpm or TFS wedges, especially since he's broke.
Afr's are good, they just aren't worth and extra $250-$300.

I think he can get 400 hp out of the heads he's got now since it's boosted.
