Head rebuild?

Here's what happened, you tell me what I should do...
One of my rockers was making a lot of noise. So I thought I would pop off the valve cover, start the engine up and tighten down the suspect rocker. But for some reason I thought I better check to see if any damage had been done. So I took the rocker off and noticed the valve tip had been worn at an angle(looked like a coner had been broken off) and even worse was that the suspect rocker, because of hitting the valve at an angle, had been cutting it's way thru the rocker stud. It made it about a third of the way thru that stud and now I'm affraid to start her up. :(
That's what makes me think that I need to pull both heads and at least have a valve job done, I guess? What are your guy's thoughts?
The worst part is I had just spent all my money on new wheels and tires and now I can't drive it! :( :notnice: :(
Who lives in the Charlotte area that will do a valve job for a case of beer? LOL

So i'm guessing these are the factory pressed in studs.

Without looking at it myself, I can't really say. It's going to need to go to a machine shop anyway (to replace stud).. I'd find a reputible shop and ask them to have a look and see what they reccomend.

With all the work, and $$ spent on gaskets and fluids to R&R the heads... it makes sence to make sure the heads are in overall good shape before putting them back on.

The tricky part is finding a shop that won't BS you with what you do and don't need.

Dude, where do you think that metal that was ground off went to? Don't make that mistake; it's time for a rebuild. I would hate to see you sink $500 into stock heads and then have a main or rod bearing go out and ruin your entire engine.

Your right about that. I'm sure that some of that metal has traveled through the engine. However, I think I'm just going to risk that no further damage has been done. The reason, I have no money to do a rebuild and I'm planning on doing an engine swap. I think I might put in a 351W or maybe a stroked 302 in it within the next year or so.
I know that sounds bad, but it's all I can do for right now. Heck I'm stretched just trying to get my heads fixed. And besides, all I do is cruise the car...I don't race it or rev it up. Not to mention I only drive it like once every two weeks or so and only for a short drive.

Thats jumping the gun just a bit, dont you think? The metal would have been washed into the pan and then pumped into the filter. Besides, if he does what you suggest, he'll be shelling out for a rebuild. If he risks it and the engine blows, he'll still be shelling out for a rebuild. If nothing goes wrong, then all it costs him is fixing the head.

Something you can do is look for a set of rebuilt 289, early 302 or E7TE heads. Sometimes you can find a good price thats less than the cost of a rebuild. I have a set of rebuilt/uninstalled 289 heads I'm not going to use(a worn out set too :D), but I dont know how I want to sell them yet.

Well hey let me know if you decide to get rid of the rebuilt 289 heads. I was just at the Food Lion Auto fair at Lowes Motor Speedway looking for a set and couldn't find anything. I was sooo bummmed! I thought for sure I would find some there. I really thought I would have had more trouble picking which set I wanted then just finding some at all. :notnice:

Theres no question, I do want want to sell them. I just havent decided if I want to list them locally or go through Ebay. I'm reluctant to do one of those "You send me the stuff and I'll send you a check" internet deals, ya know?

I have a .060 over 289 shortblock, C4, and misc. '68 and EFI stuff too(new 2bbl carb, intake, air cleaner housing, EFI fuel rails, fuel pressure reg, 24lb injectors, C&L 73mm MAF, shorty headers, etc).

So how much are you looking to sell them for AND where abouts do you live? I'm only interested in the heads for now.
