header wrap question

Has anyone hear wraped there headers. I've heard that if you wrap them to tight the headers can crack but whenever I see headers wraped there wraped tight. Anyone know or have tried it?

I personally have not tried it, but a friend of mine did. It was not how tight he wrapped his headers that destroyed them, but the moisture the header wrap absorbed. The wrap completely rusted out his headers within a year or two. I do know for sure that header wrap voids the header warranty.

Anyone else I also see a product that is more of a sleve then a tight wrap has anyone heard of someone trying it or have you yourself thanks for the input

Could you provide a link for this? I would be interested in this product. Maybe just a brand name?

There are a couple of reasons for wrapping the headers. One, it keeps the exhaust hot, which improves exhaust gas velocity (very important for turbos). Two, it helps keep some heat out of the engine bay. With big headers you can have problems keeping the plug wires from cooking. Wraps and insulators can help a great deal with this.

I have had mine wrapped (on the motor in the sig) for several months now. It very well could be increasing the rate of corrosion, especially since I just have uncoated mac swap headers. However, I ran the wrap on the stock 302 as well. My 302 mac headers were wrapped for about 4 years of daily driving. When I removed and sold the headers they did not appear to have been damaged by the wrap, just normal were.

I have also heard from many "experts" that wrap will desroy your headers. I used quotes because not all mechanics are "professionals". Maybe back in the day, when metal quality was not as good, there were major issues.

Also, fiberglass does not absorb so much water that it should be causing rust problems, at least not any more than running without wrap.

I have wraped my headers, just because I had some clutch cable problems, thought that the headers were melting the wires, never heard of them ruining headers. Maybe I should take them off to see how it looks now. (been running for about a year.

vristang I saw it in my summitracing catolog . go to summitracing.com part # THE-11248 I'm looking at the picture and it looks like moisture could maybe escape insted of running the header check it out and let me know what you guys think. Its 75$
