I was trying to investigate this myself, and I believe the answer is yes. its a great idea, and it makes it super easy for future removal for repairs, etc.

Alot of people listing them for sale say "79-93" so I guess its same to assume they didnt change between 86-87?

I want to measure mine. It doesn't look that tall.

I know that in 4 eye cars you can access the heater box from under the dash without having to remove anything I think this is just because of the dash though and not the heater box. If you do get the 4 eye box in and you dont have to drop the dash to get to it let us know!!!! I would be swapping one in ASAP.

that is only true on non AC cars. on my 86 with AC, getting the heater box out involved removing the dash, steering column, etc...

Yes, in my four eye 82 orig non ac car, the heater is accessible by just removing the glove box and a cover. Takes all of 30 minutes.

Don't know for sure if the non ac box will direct fit into a former ac car, though.
