heating up on freeway, but not around town??

i know it is hot here in cali..but now my car wants to heat up almost to the top of the temp gauge...but as soon as i get off the freeway...it cools down to just under half way on the gauge....i have a new aluminum rad, hv water pump, 180thermostat, and i just installed a new flexalight dual 12 inch fan...it is a puller....but i have the adjustable switch set to about half way...is it possible that it is coming on while on the freeway and causing a restriction  ...also, my lower air dam was remover(for the hell of it) a while ago...could that little plastic air dam the bolts up under the radiator frame be causing this?? i think im going to have to put it back on......any takers....

Check your lower radiator hose. Unless the hose is new, the spring inside could have rotted and collapsed or is missing entirely. And yes that airdam is there because its supposed to be. You can even modify one from an older Ranger to serve as an upgrade.

agreed - put the chin spoiler back on. in town your fan is pulling air by itself. not so on the road.

good luck.

The Air Dam is your problem... I'll pretty much guarantee it. A buddy of mine removed his and had the exact same problem...put it back on and his cooling problem was gone. The air dam is there to force air up into and through the rad instead of the air just flowing by underneath the car.

Shon

One other thing to think about - if you have sediment in your two bottom rows and/or deposits on the ends of the tubes that restrict flow, the car will run cool at normal speeds but run progressively hotter at higher speeds.
