I purchased a 1994 mustang from a family member who passed away. Before passing away they had done extensive work to the engine and never fired it up. So I took the car and put it together and it sounds mean. Heavy lope after market throttle body, maf, cobra intake. Problem is the car is running rich. So much gas odor that it will choke you. Throttle response is dead on, but will idle up and down?

I wont be the person to ultimately answer your question, but I can ask a few follow up questions that will help others help you. Is the car still using the stock ECU? Does the car still have catalytic converters? Were bigger injectors installed? Has it been tuned at all? That should help get the conversation going!

I can tell you from first hand experience with my '95, the exhaust smell is terrible without converters even running at lambda 1.00 / stoich AFR. Check your mid pipe for cats, you may have an off-road pipe.

Help me create the "Surging Idle Checklist"

Updated 26-Oct-2019 to clarify creeping idle RPM increase as the car is being driven. Many of you are familiar with the "Cranks OK, but No Start Checklist for Fuel Injected Mustangs" checklist and the No Crank Checklist. They are very effective in finding and eliminating the problems by use of...

Read and follow the instructions paying attention to the highlighted notes for the 94-5 models, take notes and list any non stock parts here so we can help with questions, and I agree with the post about the H pipe, although that may not be your problem.

It's not light or dark kind of light gray. Pro flow 75 maf and not clue on cam. Car sounds amazing and runs strong with pin point throttle response

Ok, you have 24 lb injectors. Is your maf sensor calibrated for 24s?

Your car is a 94. It has the same motor as my 92. My car does not have converters on it and it stinks like crazy! Just running down the road with the windows down you can smell it. God forbid you fire it up in a garage or shop. I plan to install converters on it in the future. I'd say that is your number one problem. And yes my car does the smoke thing as well. It's not burning oil and it doesn't appear to be choaking on gas either.

I had a mechanic put a fuel pressure gauge on it and everything seemed to be working correctly I'm not sure if maybe I've got some vacuum hooked up wrong or if the car just needs tuned

Look, you gonna work on this thing you gotta figure out what you got cause if you don't know for instance what cam is in it. If you can't figure it out list what aftermarket parts you got and get a cam recomendation.
You can try to make what you got work but it ain't gonna be like change a part or plug something in and suddenly all's well.
Start with the 'surging idle checklist '

Read the instructions, do the steps paying attention to the notes for the 94-5 years, they are a little different, post any questions and your progress here.
Give us a pic of the engine, we can start there.

I agree I was just wanting to get the car going for his sister(my wife). We have no clue to what's been done just rumors so it may have to just go to a shop

Pretty much anything that dictates fuel delivery can be suspect. That can range from the TPS to the O2 sensors. It could be leaky injectors, mismatched MAF sensor, fuel pressure (as I mentioned earlier...), etc. It's kinda hard to diagnose over the internet without knowing all of the little details, but stuff like bad or mismatched sensors could be a problem. Hell, it could be a bad ground somewhere for all that matters! I'm sorry if it doesn't seem very helpful, but I'd start with all of that stuff, doublechecking and testing to ensure that's all up to snuff. I'd also check to see if there are any codes as well - never know, it could lead you straight to the problem. Hopefully you can get it figured out, sounds like a labor of love!

My car did this once, was the ect sensor I believe. Would burn your eyes in the garage. FWIW,every Fox I've had with an offroad pipe never really smelled. You've definitely got something going on. Were codes pulled?
