helicoiling a crank?

The first half of the threads on my crank snout are stripped. Not exactly good for holding on a dampner. Would it be ok if I put a helicoil in it? I'm actually planning on selling the full rotating assembly and I want to make sure it's in good shape before I get rid of it.

I have helicoils in my block for the head bolts and have had no problems. In fact I read somewhere that they are in fact stronger than a standard drill and tapped hole.

I personally think you will be OK.

It should be O.K. just be sure to get the new hole drilled right (meaning in the center) Helicoils are good for strength but not the best choice in a hole where the bolt is used (in and out) a lot.

Put some thread lock on there and you'll be more then set. As HistoricMustang said, they are strong, but only in certain situations.

properly done a heli-coil will be just fine in your application.
