Help changing Freeze Plug behind motor mount.

The freeze plug behind the motor mount on the passenger side is leaking badly and emptying the coolant system within minutes. Barley made it home after numerous stops to refill water just to limp home.

What is the best approach to this freeze plug. It seems hidden behind the motor mount. Will I have to pull the engine? I just want to bandaid with a rubber temporary plug for now since a new engine is going in this winter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any tricks to get at this one?

Sombodys bound to have some sort of an idea on how to approach this??

To get it out, screw a lag bolt or big sheet metal screw into it & pry it out.

No clues about how to get the new one in without being able to put a wood block or big socket on it & hammer it in.

I'm going to use a temporary rubber plug for now just need to know the best way to get at it. Looking for someone who has done this before. I don't want to take off too much and create way more work for myself if there is a good way to get at it without taking the engine out basically.

Disconnect the battery at the battery ground terminal, remove the fan & fan shroud. Both motor mounts will need to have the large nuts that secure them to the frame removed. You may need to jack up the rear of the transmission as well to get the required clearance. The trans mount will have to be loosened, and it is a good idea to remove the drive shaft if you see that it is going to rub.

You may have to disconnect the cat pipes at the headers to get the engine high enough. Jack up the engine with a wood block under the oil pan and watch for things that bind or hoses/electrical wiring that may need to be disconnected. Put a couple of wood blocks between the headers and the frame to support the engine.

That should get you enough room to remove the motor mount and get to the freeeze plug.

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I replaced mine without taking anything but the passenger side header off. A word to the wise...get the plug from a ford dealer. I tried one from a local auto parts store and the thing didn't fit. It wasn't tight enough. I looked at the ones from other parts stores too and they were the exact same plug (well, it was actually a block heater). Just get one from the dealer, they aren't that expensive. You will thank yourself.

Yours was behind the motor mount too? How did you get the plug out? what method did you use to remove it?
