This is actually for my bro... I thought you guys might be able to help.

First of all, it is an automatic.
So I guess that when the car is in gear, he has to keep the rpms at 1000 or more or it will die. Anybody know what that could be?

i am not near him... i told him to pull the battery cable and turn on the lights to reset the comp... ill see if that does anything.

Will an engine throw a code even though the "check engine" light isn't on?

To replace you need about 50$ (50resto.com has them for 45 + s/h), a 8mm socket, an extension and some carb cleaner (to clean the port going into the plenum). you might as well replace the gasket while you are at it seeing how they are like 3$ or less.

to clean it it costs about 3$ for the carb cleaner.
