x2 I was new to cars and had a friend come over on a Sunday to help replace my water pump, as it was making a noise inside it. Come to find out, he found where the balancer was bad and smacking the bottom water pump bolt. So I had the wrong part, my car was in pieces, and it was Sunday. Autozone was the ONLY place to get a replacement balancer.
That one lasted 8-9 months.
Anyway, get in there and pull the pulleys off. It'll help you find the source.

My friend even had me doing the ole tubing to the ear trick to listen to different areas of the engine while it was running while I was on the phone with him.
YUP, the sound is DEFINITELY coming from the water pump. (That's because the HB was beating the crap out of it. )
