Help me diagnose this problem

Ok just recently when I put my defrost or AC on for that matter the compressor pulley stops spinning and the engine belt just drags across the stopped pulley causing it to warp and wear down the belt and resulting in a horrible rubber smell. What do I need to do hear, i heard that this may be due to low freon but i doubt that, is the clutch bad or do I need a whole new compressor? Also why does the defrost cause the compressor to go on in the first place? Thanx please help guys anyone had this problem b4

the clutch isnt shot, the inside of the compressor is seized up. but yeah dude, you need a new compressor

I agree, compressor is seized. I'm also baffled as to why Ford designed the defrost setting to spin the compressor and turn on the fan
I mean, you put the defrost on, you most likely want heat. The fan makes the motor heat up slower. Thats very counter-productive IMO. I'm sure there is a resonable explanation for it.

I've been told compressor runs when in defrost mode for 2 reasons. The A/C helps dry the air out so when you are defrosting your windshield it won't accumulate condensation on the inside which could later fog over. And second, because everyone uses defrost at some point or another in the winter by forcing the compressor to run it helps to keep the compressor from locking up over the winter from a long period of not being used.

Correct. The defroster works as much as a dehumidifier as anything.

I have had a clutch lock up and it not be the compressor. It probably just needs a new clutch.

How was yours acting? How hard was it to change the clutch did u have to take the compressor out?

It seems to me: if the clutch locks up, it should spin the compressor, unless the compressor is seized and can't spin.
